I convert DV to AVI using VirtualDub and insert an extracted WAV audio file.
Video Codec: DivX Pro v5.0.3, 1000 Bitrate
    Audio Codec: MP3 96 Kbits, 48 KHz.
Encoding Methods: 2-pass; 1st-pass, 2nd-pass through Job Control.
Filters: De-interface (Blend), Sharpen by 6.

The whole process seems to work fine.
When I go to play the finished file in Windows Media Player, the audio plays, but there is no video. When i try to re-open this file in VD and browse through it, VD crashes and the file information says it is still DV with a decompressor of MainConcept DV Demo v2.1.0. DivX Player says "Failed to open". BSPlayer says "Unknown file type (1).

    Does anyone know what's wrong?

Just a guess, but it sounds like your compression settings for the final output were possibly to blame. Sometimes I will try a 'fast recompress', or 'normal recompress' to speed things up. Those options have given me simular symptoms like the original input codec, rather than the expected (selected) output codec.

What options did you have selected for the final output. Fast, normal, or full?

Open it in GSpot (find it in the TOOLS section), to view the codecs in the AVI. Something isn't right...

Stream Type: Multipart Open DML AVI
    Video Codec: N/A

I have no idea how you've gotten you the place where your at. I would start over at this point. Maybe take a more manual approach to the 2nd pass, and check your output afte a minute or so to make sure it's working as expected.
