  4. is your hard drive set up for UDMA (is the option checked). Has it been defragmented recently. Do you have a lot of garbage running the back ground? It sounds like it is one of these three things, however, with your system, which has more than enough to do the job that you are wanting, it sounds like you do not have dma checked or there is a SERIOUS conflict somewhere along the line.

two other suggestions. Check your system to make sure there are no conflicts or shared IRQ's or something. The other thing would be to physically move the pci card to another slot and see if that clears up the problem.

  5. Make sure you have the format set correct ie NTSC or Pal

I was dropping so many frames unitl I relaised that I had it set for NTSC 29.97 but was trying to capture pal 25 frames hence a million dropped frames....

Other than that it could be a million things like system etc
How long could we maintain? I wondered. How long until one of us starts raving and jabbering at this boy? What will he think then?

If you like Tekno download one of my tracks

I don't know what to tell you myself because I am having the same problem. I used to have a Celeron 633 with Windows ME that captured to my Maxtor 60 gig just fine. I stepped up to a Soyo motherboard with a Celeron 2.0 and have 384 megs of memory and upgraded to Windows XP and now when I try to capture I drop frames all the time. I think Windows XP runs a bunch of stuff in the background but when I try to dissable or close any of it it won't let me. I also think I have serious problems with how my hard drives are set up with my new Bios because I get write erros on my hard drives and on my HP DVD writer too. If I ever get it figured out I'll let you know. It is a good thing I have 3 other computers until I figure this out. This is the first one I've built. If anyone has any ideas let me know also.

  7. DMA is enabled on both hard drives, and both are fully deframented. I have attempted to capture to both drives no luck.

I have only a apache http server, and mcaffe antivirus running in background. After closing these two i get the same result.

As for IRQ conflicts there are none, I have even tried given the request priority above the other devices, i get a little better performance like low 80% dropped frames, better than 88%.

as far as moving the card, its AGP, I didnt even know ppl used PCI cards anymore??

Only thing new or different is that I went from xp pro to home..since then I have had to reinstall everything. And my capture has been shot since then.

arena_man check out http://www.tweakxp.com it has some good guides for disabling uneeded services and freeing up resources in xp.

I uninstalled of drivers and software and have since reinstalled. Now I can not capture anything....this sux btw !

I'll give tweakxp a try but I'm sure I just don't know what I'm doing wrong between my new mother board, new OS and old Maxtor 60 gig. What is funny is tha my old, old 5400 15 gig drives captures without dropping a single frame. I'm sure it is with these UDMA drives cause I also have a problem with my 80 gig western digital. One day I'll get it right.

  9. What is the source you are trying to capture from? I've got a similar problem with trying to capture my 8mm camcorder tapes and poor quality VHS tapes. I loose like 90% of the frames when trying to capture these poor sources. I can capture from a high quality source just fine, so I think my system is capable enough to capture. I have yet to find a solution to capture these poor quality sources without massive frame loss, but wanted to mention this in case this was your problem too.
