  1. As I've indicated in a previous post, I do a lot of CD-ROM presentations using Macromedia Director. I compress MPEG files with TMPGEnc or a Heuris Export module.

The VCD (MPEG 1) preset in TMPGEnc is a bitrate of 1246 kbps. If you load the unlock.mcf preset, you can increase the bitrate.

But how do you draw a correlation between bitrate and CD-ROM speeds?

Heuris has a "default" preset, and a 2x CD-ROM preset. In this day and age, I'm sure we can afford to increase the bitrate, since CD-ROM drives are obviously a lot faster.

I want the best quality MPEG 1 file I can afford. So what bitrate do I aim for?

    Thanks!

The bitrate is a personal preference. It depends on the quality that you want. However, the higher the bitrate, the larger file size. I do a lot of stuff with DV video, when I do conversion, I use 1000 for my bitrate. Niiice.

As long as they are for PC play, you can increase the bitrate. If you exceed the preset bitrate, it becomes an xVCD, which may not play in a standalone DVD player, unless it supports bitrates higher than standard (xVCD). Again, not an issue if your disc is for PC use only.
