  1. What I want to do is rip out the movie/audio VOBs from a DVD and create a new menu for it. However I do not want to spend 14hours re-encoding these VOBs into MPEG2 files just so I can use them with DVD Workshop.

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to do this or am I stuck with major re-encode times?

    Thanks in advance.

I have been using DVD Workshop until the evaluation expired, so I'm doing this from memory.

You can rip the VOB files with SmartRipper and demultiplex the Videofile into a single m2v file and the audio into an .AC3 (probably) file.

If the video stream (+ audio) will fit into the DVDR then you don't need to re-encode the video.

Can't remember if DVD Workshop can take AC3 files, but think it cannot. If so, you can use Re-MPEG to re-encode the AC3 file into an MP2 stream. Does take some time, but in the range of 20-40 minutes per movie.

Then you can use Tmpgenc (MPEG Tools from the File Menu) to multiplex the M2V and the MP2 files into an MPEG file DVD Workshop will take.

To avoid re-encoding, all you need is to check a checkbox somewhere in the authoring phase screens that says something like "Don't re-encode valid video streams".
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  3. HUH?

Rip out movie/audio VOBs ? Dont you mean movie (M2v)/ Audio (Ac3) ? So, if you demux them from a VOB (Video Object File) you done re-encode anything, its already in its elementry form. You would just bring them into your authoring app, without doing anything to them. If they fit on a blank DVDr do to the size of these files, then you re-encode (to shrink them). So, YES, you can simply demux the streams and create a new menu. Now, if you want to keep them as VOBS that are stream ripped, well, thats another topic.

  4. Ah yes thanks guys. That's what I'm after. I just need to demux the VOBs into the two formats and then remux into mpeg2. Ideal.

    Thanks again.

  5. You remux into a new -VOB-, man you got all you DVD terms backwards.

  6. no, because I'm seperating the video and audio from the VOB. I can then multiplex them together to make an mpeg which I can stick into DVD workshop and everyone is happy.
