I have a stock 16x LiteOn DVD-ROM Drive and a Pioneer 105 DVD-R installed in a HP with a Pentium 4 2.26 GHZ processor. It seems that I never get above 2X ripping/read speeds with either drive. A dual layer disc usually takes 45 mins to an hour to rip. Is there anything I can do to achieve better speeds with these drives? Thanks.

*cough* LiteOn sucks *cough*
Anyways -- there are a few posts that talk about the different model LiteOn has -- and they mention firmware upgrades or downgrades might unlock the speeds... You should do a search for it...

P.S. PIONEER S106!!!!! -
Your Pioneer is locked at 2x, nothing you can do to improve it's speed. Your Liteon however should rip well above 2x. Try rearranging your master slave combinations and see if that helps. Also make sure DMA is enabled for these drives, if running in PIO mode rips will be slow. If this does not help, go into device manager and delete the IDE controller and let Windows reinstall it after you reboot. If none of these work, try checking your liteon's firmware and see if an update is available.

I have a Pioneer DVR-105 also and noticed that it wouldn't rip past 2x. I also just got a LiteOn LTD-166S and will be installing tomorrow. Out of curiousity, why is the Pioneer locked at 2x?

I was in the same predicament with my Cendyne DVR-105, so I purchased the LiteOn 166 16 DVD-ROM drive and it rips most DVDs between 7X - 16X speed = 5-7 minutes for a full rip even on dual layer. This is with stock firmware. I would highly recommend this drive for its fabolous DAE and DVD ripping speeds or even for a fast DVD-ROM or CD-ROM reader.

Same problem here SONY DRU-500AX locked at 2x rip speeds.
could a firmware upgrade fix this (i have the latest just now but could sony fix this with a firmware upgrade ) i know they wont but could it be possible or is it a hardware thing rather than a firmware thing.. -
Well I installed my LiteOn 166S and it started ripping at 4x and ended at 7.5x. I'm happy with that. I used DVD Decryptor and extracted only the movie THE_TUXEDO at 4.36 gigs in 12 min. My speeds may be a bit lower than most cause I was doing other stuff while ripping and the drive is slaved to the burner. But it sure beats the DVR-105 at 2x.

You only need a 1x DVD-ROM drive to play DVD video discs. So most DVD-ROM drives are locked at 2x read for CSS encoded discs. The Liteon drives are not (at least they use not to be, it appears that some of the newer drives/firmwares have added this 'feature.')

I do not know why, but all the burners presently on the market are locked at 2x for reading protected discs. They will rip unprotected discs at higher speeds but those are few and far between. So only solution is a second dvd reader for ripping protected discs at faster speeds. I have the liteon 166s and average 6-8x on dvd9 discs, >10x on dvd5 discs using DVDdecrypter. Also upgraded to latest firmware (ds14).

thanx for the info
I really don't like doing firmware upgrades unless manditory. I think I'll stick with the one it came with (DS0F) for now.
