I have some files on my computer that I would like to transfer to dvd they are avi....Divix...3vidxD4 etc. I have probalbly wasted over 50 dvd-r and dvd-rw...My stand-alone plays all formats as listed in your forums I just can't seem to grasp the conversions etc...although I consider myself well versed in computers..I am completely stumped....

    Thank you :P

Wow, where to begin. You have picked one of the trickier things to do, backing up your own DVD's is much easier it seems to me.

The AVI's need to be re-encoded to MPEG2 DVD complient video. TMPGEnc or CCE will do this. The audio needs to be converted as well, you can use CCE or TMPGEnc (they aren't so good for audio) or some seperate program like BeSweet. Now if the AVI's are DivX/XviD, some of the encoders may not open them for a variety of reasons, but the reasons are covered to death and back in the forums and guides.

Once you have made your conversion, you need to 'author' your DVD. This puts the right things in the right spots in the right format. DVD's use VOB's, and they need to be created(think of them more like multiple ZIP files, although they aren't compressed). Then it needs to be burned.

Are you sure your player can play DVDR's? Do they play on your computer and not your standalone?

  3. thanks for the reply. My computer is able to play them after I burn them to DVD-r but the stand-alone wont. Its a sony and it list all the formats and dvd-r is just one of many. What I don't understand is why it can play on the computer using a dvd that I burnt but it will not play on the stand-alone.
I have a Sony 500a with updated firmware.
Thanks for the reply its' appreciated

PC Based DVD software is much more flexible as to what it will play. A good player like WinDvd or PowerDvd will play almost anything that is mpeg (1 or 2) whereas a standalone player requires correct DVD-video specs.

How are you authoring and burning your disks? It seems likley that the error is in that area.

  5. hello again:
I am converting them first through TMPGenc Plus then use nero to burn following the guidelines set forth in the forum. I seperate the audio from the video and place them in there respective folders and proceed to burn using Nero.

What program are you using to author your DVD? Ifoedit, MyDVD, Maestro or one of the Ulead programs? You have to author your DVD first before burning.
May the force be with you.
