MPEG4? Well, one flavor is DivX, isn't it? Then VirtualDub with DivX codec installed will do the trick quite nicely. XviD is another option.

And you may want to consider Microsoft's version of MPEG-4 in the form of Windows Media Encoder. All the relevant tools and SDKs are available from the Microsoft WEB site free of charge.

The quality is good, although the whole system is oriented towards streaming video, rather than AVI for archival.

It is however important to note that some DVD players can play WMV MPEG-4 video and more will emerge at some point.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

There is already one that (says it) can play Mpeg4: the KISS DVD player. How well this works, I can't judge, but I doubt you can dl any mpeg4 AVI from the web, burn it to CD and watch it...
But MS may very well include a WMV player in some (no doubt expensive)upgrade for their own home entertainment computer (XBox).

?? I've read lots of specs and reviews on Panasonic rp82, but no mention of WMV support - just the usual VCD, MP3, CD-R stuff - until I looked at Panasonics own site. Strange indeed! On the other hand, it seems more reasonable to say "OK, we play WMV" like Panasonic, than to say "We play anything that's within the MPEG4 standards" like Kiss... Good luck!
