  1. I currently have the following setup for my ide devices and would like to know if a "PCI Ide Controller" had any problems like being slower then the ide slots on the mobo.

hda > os's and storage partitions
hdb > video capture partition and more storage partition
    hdc > cdrw
    hdd > DVD-Rom

I would to move hdb onto it's own ide line so it has a better change of keeping with my 768x480 stream copy's from my tv card. and I may include another drive for capturing.

So is there any drawback to putting a drive for captures on a "pci ide controller" and what would be a rough price for one of the cards?

I have an extra PCI IDE controller myself!!! I don't even notice that there is one installed...! Capturing from DV or whatever source goes flawless!!!

I would recommend a Promise Ultra 133 PCI controller wich costs only 64euro (this is about 65US$)

No problem for me either. I use a controller +1 year old, under Win98. A little problem is that asking device properties on IDE device is slow. Launching Nero freezes, say, 10 seconds. But apart from this, I managed to capture 1 hour in PAL D1 with my Miro DC30+ with no frameloss.
    I saw a controller that does IDE/Firewire/USB2 on http://www.pearl.fr

  5. Just be aware that (some) PCI IDE Controller cards can cause problems if you attach to it ATAPI drives (DVD-ROM; DVD burner, CD...). At least that is what I believe is true based on posts that I was reading. I do not own such controller.

  6. @Fedd. What sort of IRQ resources does the IDE controller card use under Win 98? Can it be used at full speed sharing with say the graphics card or Soundblaster card m/b resources?

  7. I have a SIIG PCI controller which has only my Pioneer 105 DVD burner on it. Works well for me.

I have a Promise Ultra133 card. Supports both hard drives and ATAPI devices--no problems. Bought it for $36 at Newegg.com including shipping.

I have Maxtor's Ultra 133 controller, with a 80gb 7200 Ultra 133 drive that I use exclusively for capturing. As others have posted, optical drives are an issue because they run slower - the controller is designed for faster drives. You may or may not experience issues.

I'm running Win 2k and I DO have a 50x cd-rom running on it. I get event logs daily, but the drive's performance doesn't seem to be affected.

    Hey . . .

Check my machine specs - the controller I use runs a raid 0 stripe array, and is used for both capturing and editing. I can capture (using Virtual VCR 2.6.9.6252) at 740 x 576 with maybe one or two dropped frames over a 3hr capture - gotta be happy with that!

Short answer - YES, they are worth it (BTW, that card cost me $50AUD about 4 months ago)

    Cheers,

    B.
