I recently upgraded to QTPro (and purchased the MPEG-2 decoder). When I take an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 file and try to convert it to MPEG-4 or AVI, I get video only, no audio.

Someone recently told me that this is a "bug" in QT since v4 regarding processing MPEG files. Is this true???!?!?

If so, what am I paying to get Pro for?

    Thanks, Michael

not sure if i would describe it as a bug, but more of a shortcoming in QT 6. It just doenst like MPEG files. Playing them is one thing, and converting TO them is fine also. converting them to another format however is another. There are several free UNIX based tools for OS X that do a stellar job of converting mpeg files anyhow.

QT 6 Pro is good for several things. You can convert Divx or quicktime .mov files to MPEG 1 or 2, you can change .aif files to .wav, you can export to .mp4 just to name a few -- It's worth the $30... Just not from an mpeg aspect.

Thanks for the reply. What OS X tools can I use to convert my MPEG-1/2 files to AVI or MPEG-4?

    Thanks

  4. I put together a little app that does what you want.
Rips the mp3 or ac3 from the original mpeg, converts it wav.
Opens the mpeg in QT with the converted audio.
Edit as needed, then export with audio, to many formats, including avi and mpeg4.
Note: limited to file size limits of QT (1-4 gig).

  6. Also be aware that the MPEG-2 decoder can't decode AC-3 audio. So if you are transcoding a MPEG-2 video that has AC-3 audio, then you will get no sound. Apple states this in the FAQ for the MPEG-2 decode component.

I've tried to use Quicktime to export video (from EyeTV) and well, it's kinda difficult but can be done. If you have Final Cut Pro, it installs some kinds of extensions in Quicktime that let you access sound. I believe I have succesfully done it before although most of Apple's programs won't accept muxed mpegs. Hope that helps.

My daughter has FCPro 1.25; I don't know if that has the extentions you mention, but probably not, cause I believe that version is OS9. I will give MME a try later on...

How do you like EYE TV? I was considering it, but I also wanted the ability to digitize MPEG-2, and I have DirecTV which makes it difficult to connect to EYE TV and change channels.
