  1. After using DVD Decryter to rip a TV episode dvd to my harddrive, how or what software can I use to convert the VOB files to AVI files? The reason is I can do more video editing with ECDC6 using AVI files.

  3. VirtualDub will allow you to open .vob files, edit, add filters, etc., and convert to .avi without leaving the program.

If the movie/episode spans on over than a single VOB (which is the case in every DVD I have seen), you will have problems with DVD2AVI and virtualDUB that only read one VOB. FlaskMPEG is better because it reads the IFO (if you choose) and automatically reads the correct VOBs and/or VOB segments. Particularly important with Episode DVDs.

Another approach would be to use SmartRipper to further Rip the HD copy of the DVD and create either a single VOB of the movie/episode or demultiplex the video stream and audio stream into m2v and ac3 files.

If you want to convert to AVI, the best thing is to smartrip to a single VOB and then use VirtualDUB to read the VOB and convert to AVI. Why would I not use FlaskMPEG (was using in the past)? Because it is much slower than VirtualDUB, even if you add the separate Smartripper pass (which is only 2-3 minutes anyway). Additionally, VirtualDUB allows any kind of filter performed on the movie.

On my system, FlaskMPEG converts at approx. 15 fps while VirtualDUB goes to 30 or so, doing the same thing.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
