TEMPGEnc-resizing mp2 file creates artifacts? Please help...

Hi there.. I've recently captured a 75 minute movie from LD to an mp2 file, using my ATI AIW Radeon 7500 at DVD-quality settings - 8mbps.. The resulting file was like 8gb which was way too big (this is gonna go on a dvdr). So I ran it through TMPGEnc, making sure everything stayed dvd compliant (the audio, etc.) and set the bitrate of the new file to be 3500.. The resulting file has sporadic artifacts.. The filesize was perfect though.. Just a little over 2 gb. Is there some way to do this with a filter or something that will avoid any artifacts? I should mention that they don't exist on the source file. Please advise.. I've been working on this dvd's menus/buttons/etc. for quite a while and have made them look professional.. The last thing in the world I need is a flawed video to lay under them. Thanks!

I would try capturing from LD to an avi file using the Huffy codec. Then encoding the avi to mpeg2 using TMPGEnc.

By capturing directly to mpeg2 the first time, you lose video information. The avi/huffy combo would be a lossless capture.

I assume you want a 720x480 resolution capture but this may not be possible with avi/huffy. Depends on the speed of your system. But 352x480 is also dvd compatible and looks good.

Hmm.. I can see how that would probably work, but I'd need to take EVERYTHING off my hd to allow room for an avi of that size.. Let me ask this: Think my chances are better for avoiding artifacts if I recaptured from the LD directly to a 3500 bitrate file? Like I said, the initial capture was much bigger (and at a higher bitrate) but there were no artifacts whatsoever.. I'm wondering if TEMPGEnc is to blame here I guess.. It's done well for me many times, but this is the first time I've had to resize a big mp2 to a smaller one.. What do you think? Oh and thanks for responding!

Yeah...try going from LD to a smaller mpeg2 file. That might look better.

The problem is that a mpeg file is already compressed. When you run it thru TMPEGEnc, it gets compressed again. You dont want to do this if you can avoid it. But you did use a high bitrate from the LD to mpegs, so it should look pretty good. Not sure.

Try my first suggestion (avi/huffy) with just 2 to 3 minutes of video. See how it looks.
