Hi all

I am having trouble getting to grips with this video editing stuff. I think my problem is that there is just too much choice, too many ways to do each job. If there was a 'best tool' for each step of the job, life would be a lot easier, as it seems there are dozens of tools that need to be learned to be able to convert different filetypes with any success.

I am using this post to enable me to decide on tools to download/purchase as I do not really want to waste time and money.

The first job I am doing, is as follows:

Transfer of VHS video to DVD-r

Captured in Adobe Premiere 6... 'Widescreen 48K' preset, (I expect this is correct the vhs tape is in widescreen format)?.................3hrs = 43GB!!!

I tried to edit the file in TMPGEnc trial version, (I have used the program a little in the past), but it would not accept it. Is this because of the huge size? I believe I have captured in DV AVI format?

Edited and authored in Ulead DVD Workshop trial... I converted it, (on the third attempt!!), to 352x288 .... constant 3000 .... mpg audio 224. This was the best I could do to fit the 3hrs onto the 4.4GB available on my dvd-rw.

So I am left with a finished dvd-backup, with no menus or fancy stuff.

Could you please comment on the method/progs I have used. I have Ulead DVDMovieFactory SE and VideoStudio 6 pre-installed on my pc, but have not used them yet.

Could I trim the black borders from the film? Would this make any difference in file size?

Basically I would be greatful if you could point me in the right direction, I am currently capturing vhs, but I would like to backup my dvd collection in the future. I am thinking of converting dvd to svcd so I can fit several movie onto one disc.

Phew..... Sorry for the length of the post, I have a hundred more questions. All comments would be very greatfully received.

Thanks for the help
