  1. I've got a movie (avi - divx) that I want to convert to mpeg but when I put it into virtualdub (to check the file) it tells me that there is an unknown audio codec on it.
So I can't convert it to mpeg (because it can't decode the audio).
Can somebody tell me how I can figure out what codec the audio whas encoded with?

I have got the Nimo Codec Pack installed!

    Its Ac3, Dolby Digital Surround
Try to find an AC3 codec or just update your Direct Show

Gspot, in the Tools section under Other Tools, will test any file and report the required codec and if it is installed.

G Spots the best, not only tells you what codecs, but also whether or not you have it installed. :P

  5. gspot told me that I've got the ac3 codec installed but in virtualdub it still tells me that it is an unknown audio codec! -> it wont let me encode it to mpeg

  7. found another way to solve the problem myself!

I used Goldwave to make a .wav from that ac3 and then i made a new avi in Virtualdub. (Audio as a wav source -> convert it to mp3 and video as direct stream copy...)

    ...seems to work!

Thanks to Goldwave - a very helpful tool!

I use Goldwave for AC3 and MP3-VBR sound. Vdub does not convert AC3 and you need Vdub-MP3 when you have MP3-VBR. Goldwave is definitely the easiest way but I think Soundforge and Besweet will do the same thing.
