    See these links

From what I've been reading CQ mode is the best. Even better than mult-pass VBR. It seems that CQ is really similar to multi-pass VBR but gives up files size to reach a certain quality rather than striving towards to average. This results in slightly unpredictable file sizes / bit rates but if you aren't trying to squeeze 2 hours of video on a DVD then this should be fine.

This site also rates the new Ligos encoder better than CCE and TMPeg.
I should note that he rates the quality the same but the overall rating is better for Ligos. Albeit, this is just one person, but it seems like he's used pretty complicated scenes. IMHO.

It seems like he takes a lot of points away from TMPEG and CCE for usability and bugs. (I think we all agree that both tools need several work arounds to get them work properly and often need post-processing tools to get a proper mpeg. i.e. pulldown.exe).

that review was done 3 years ago --- and at the time not to many people really agreed with his conclusions -- now non of the products are the same anyway (or the base system)....

3 years is a long time in the computer world ..

Actually, some of the reviews are updated.

i.e. The Ligos review is based on the 3.5 encoder, which is a newer one and the CCE version is 2.62 which is higher than the one most people use today (being 2.50). It doesn't seem he has looked at TMPEG since, but if you assume CCE and TMPEG are close then comparing Ligos to CCE should be fair.

Anyway, I'm not trying to stir anything up here about the differences between the encoders, it's way to subjective, but more about the VBR and CQ or VBR w/ Q and see what people think about it.

I haven't seen many discussions about it. Mind you, I'm not talking DVD ripping here, but more about converting DV to MPEG (DVD).
