  1. I just bought a Sony DRX-500UL DVD recorder.. I have several SVCD (mpeg) files on my hard drive that i have dowloaded.. Can you with the
current technology burn more than 1 of the files to the DVD-R ? The files
are about 820 MB each.. Is it possible to do this so i can fit 5 on one
DVD and then be able to watch them in a standalone player with a small
    menu?

Thanks in advance for your help

  2. Here is a nice program that will do what you want and even put a menu on the DVD.

  3. Will this let me have about 4 or 5 shows (files) with menus on a
DVD (something like using it as a larger capacity SVCD using the
    large size of the DVD)

Yes it will do all that and more. If you let it record at 1/2 DVD you could put 10 or more 800MB files on a DVD. This program also does video capture, editing, converting, authoring, copying, burning, VCD, SVCD, and more.

10 * 800 = 8000 or 8Gigs. This will not fit on a DVD-r. If you lower the bitrate to make it fit it will reduce the quality.

5 * 800 = 4000, allow a little space for Menus etc will fit easily.

  8. Bugster, Any thoughts on good software to do this with? what i want to do is put 5 or 4 800MB Mpegs onto a DVD and be able to watch it in a stand
    alone player..

I just got my DVD Recorder 2 days ago so i am really new
at this.. Do i have to format all DVD Media before use or just the DVD+RW? Also I know there is a debate on which media type to choose
+ or -.. What is considered more reliable at this point? Since my sony
    can use both...

    thanks

  9. If your existing mpegs are standard VCD's the Ulead DVD WS (or possibly the cheaper moviefactory) are good choices for authoring. If you have SVCD's then it is a little more difficult as this is not DVD compliant resolution, so take a look at this guide for ideas.

Do not format your DVD. The only time you need to format a DVD is if you want to make a data DVD and use it like a large floppy disk.

+R, -R, who cares. All that really matters is what format will play in any standalone DVD player you intend to use them in, overall compatibility levels are very similiar. Look up your player(s) in the DVD players list to the left and see which format is best for you (P.S, whichever you choose, keep away from the very cheapest media, at least to start with as that where most compatibility problems come from).

    Hope this helps

Putting SVCDs on DVD with ANY program involves some interesting and time consuming steps.

    1. Audio in SVCD is sampled at 44kHz. For DVD it must be 48kHz. ssrc can resample, but that takes time. Does not affect quality. You also need to demultiplex the SVCD Mpeg into elementary (video + audio) to do that.

    2. DVDs must have a certain GOP structure. Several SVCD encoders don't bother with that and I have seen at least one mpeg-2 encoder that creates an mpeg-2 stream that doesn't have GOP headers. Such SVCD streams will most likely be rejected by any DVD authoring program.

In general, you will likely need to re-encode these files into correct DVD mpeg streams. Tmpgenc is a good program that is low cost, versatile and slow. MainConcept MPEG encoder is another that is more expensive and less flexible (but flexible enough), and also is 5~10 times faster. CCE Basic is in the middle, equally fast with Mainconcept and does good quality encoding.

There is a guide in dvdrhelp.com that shows how SVCD files can be put into DVD. The guide is good but the job is messy.

Since you are new in DVD, forget about doing such conversions for the moment. Start with the basics, encode an AVI into DVD, experiment and get experience with the tools required and once you begin to realize what's going on, venture into the SVCD --> DVD conversion. Will just save you time and frustration.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

There are MANY ways to do this. You must find the one that works for you.

Here is an excellent GUIDE on putting SVCD's on DVD's:
