  1. i have tried converting avi files (130-200m size) using tmpgnec. the source is great according to the rating but when i burn using nero or vcd easy, the quality is less than desirable. i have heard to stay away from avi files because they are too compressed and go after the larger files (700m variety). does that apply to all avi files or just the ones that are compressed in the 200m and under size range. does this apply to divx/xvid also or do they look fine upon conversion to vcd or svcd. any other input on which formats would be best for burning to svcd would be much appreciated.

Have you actually watched the source .avi?
Is it a film, 200 meg isn't much of size for a decent quality film. 700 meg upwards is more like it and as long as the source looks sharp as an avi file, with the right tools and guidance you should be able to get great results.

  3. when i watch it in full screen mode on my computer the picture is probably a 5 on a scale of 10 but i was attributing that to watching it on my computer screen. not the case i take it. based on what you said, i take it that avi is not the problem but size which does matter after all.

As my wife keeps saying, size does matter .
Your avi should be looking like a 9 min' on your monitor. You will lose some in conversion and the step up to your big telly as well but if you go for the 700 meggers you will convert to good quality movies.

Crap in, Crap out. as they say.
