I have a FAT32 WIN98SE system (with 4G max file size limitation). Here's my problem:

    1. I have captured a DV movie into multiple split files - using ScenalyzerLive.
    2. Got 2 4-Gbytes AVI (DV Type 1) files.
    3. Encoded each using TMPGEnc.
    4. Got 2 350-Mbytes MPG files (SVCD encoded).
    5. Joined them (the *.mpg) into 1 700-Mbytes mpg file.
    6. Tried to author it with Nero (set to SVCD) - and got an error - "error in encoded stream..."

My assumption is that simple MPG joining BREAKs the encoded stream somehow to be incompatible.

    My question is this:
How can I feed multiple 4G AVI files into an Encoding SW (TMPGEnc, MainConcept, CinemaCraft, or any other encoder) and get an "Encoded-Joined" MPG result ?

    Thanks - roli

    How did you join them?

Using TmpGenc Mpeg tools merge and split option it should join fine. If this still causes a problem, then remultiplexing with TmpGenc simple multiplex should fix it.

    Hope this helps

I joined the mpg files using a utility called: "AVI/MPG/RM Joiner" V2.30 (by Boilsoft).

As for TMPEnc MPEG tools: When I activate the "Simple Multiplex" menu - I don't see an option to multiplex MULTIPLE files (neither AVI nor MPG).

From looking at this menu options - I suspect that TMPGEnc can only multiples Audio into Video - but not Multiple mpg files. Please correct me if I'm wrong !!!

    Thanks - roli

Joining. I have used the same tool and had the same problem.

When I say re-multiplex, I mean on the already joined file. This should fix the headers and any error/inconsistencies in the joined stream created by the AVI/MPG/RM Joiner.

To use it, select simple multiplex and select your mpeg as both audio and video sources. Select an output filename and click run.

    Hope this Helps

Looks reasonable that during the rather simple MPG joining process there are some Multiple inconsistent headers which make the stream look incompatible for Nero.

I'll try your advise (fixing the joined MPG file with TMPGEnc).

I have followed your advise - and it failed !

TMPGEnc Plus -> MPEG Tools... -> Simple Multiplex
Feeding in a 650M joined MPG file.
Getting out (assigning a different filename) a 111M result MPG file (I guess it is the 1st "joined" file)...

Why not batch encode with MainConcept Mpeg Encoder? Makes doing exactly what you want very easy. I captured tv episodes to dv.avi, trim commercials with virtualdub and then batch encode the 5 or 6 avis into one dvd authoring ready mpg in about realtime with a 2.8 P4. Very Very quick and easy.

<EDIT> pages 21 thru 23 of the .pdf manual that comes with the encoder

Get yourself a copy of Virtualdub. Open the first file within Vdub, append the second file to the first. After running Auxsetup.exe to get frameserving set up (there's a guide on this site somewhere re: frameserving), frameserve the files to Tmpeg. Open up the created vdr file within Tmpeg, and process the video to your specifications.

Sometimes tmpeg will hang, but 99 times out of 100, a second tmpeg session will process the video just fine.

    Hope this helps

    metoo2:

How do you get around virtualdub's inability to open the audio portion of a type 1 dv avi? He could convert to type 2. I open the type 1 in tmpgenc and save the audio out to a wav file and then open the type 1 with the wav audio in virtualdub. saves me a little time and I'm only doubling the audio storage requirements not the video. Now that virtualdub mods can open mpeg2 I'm really spoiled and wishing there was a mod to open type 1 dv.avis with audio so I could cut out the convert step. I have found that the new Video Studio 7 will allow you to trim type1s and then output as one file.

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea cupla; I hadn't realized that Vdub didn't like type 1 dv avi, so I did a little Googling and found this site:

    Does it help any?

    Thanks all for your tips.
    I have figured it out.

    1. In TMPGEnc - there's an option to be set on (Option -> Environmental Setting -> Open sequence files as a movie), and multiple files name convention to follow (which, BTW, Scenalyzer automatically nicely creates anyways)

    2. In MainConcept - even easier - using Batch Mode processing.

Dont' try to encode individual files to MPGs, and then join the MPGs created. It doesn't work !!!
