  1. Using a JVC HR DVS 1U to play VHS and download to hard drive, using built in Firewire/1394 on the machine and on my PC. Only have 20G HD, so I have to do 1 section at a time rather than the whole thing. Further, I’m trying to take the contents of 2 separate ½ hour tapes and combine them onto 1 DVD. Once on the HD, here’s what I did: Using TMPGEnc, convert one of the ½ hour movies to separate audio and video streams, using the DVD NTSC template. Once done, use IFO Edit to make the IFO’s and VOB’s. (Use Author DVD/Create new dvd button) When done, I delete everything from the HD EXCEPT the just created VOB’s. Then repeat for the second ½ hr tape. Now I have 6 VOB’s, 3 in a folder, and 3 in another folder. The VOB’s in each folder are named Vts 01 01, Vts 01 02, and Vts 01 03. I thought I could use IFO edit’s ‘Create IFO’s’ button to make the IFO’s for my DVD. I never used this feature before. I renamed the VOB’s in the 2nd folder Vts 01 04, Vts 01 05, and Vts 01 06, and then moved them into the first folder. Opened IFO Edit, and hit’ Create IFO’s. It asks for the first VOB in the series. I opened Vts 01 01 and hit Create IFO’s. Sure enough, it finds and creates IFO’s for the DVD using all six VOB’s in the folder, just like I wanted. Then, I burned to a DVD/RW for testing purposes. It plays, but not well. The image is fine if I can get it to play, but the control buttons on the DVD player (Pioneer DV-C503) work sporadically, sometimes not at all. I notice the time display window of the player shows weird times, like 33 minutes into it even though I just started playing the DVD. The pause and fast-forward don’t work, and stop sometimes fails to work. The picture locks up from time to time too, especially when trying to operate the functions on the remote. When it locks, I have to power the player down to stop. On power up, the same things that worked the previous time don’t work the same. I was thinking that the time code that was duplicated when downloading from the 2 separate tapes might have something to do with it. Please forgive me if there’s a guide on this forum that covers what I’m trying to do. I searched and didn’t find it. So, any thoughts on the process I’m trying will be greatly appreciated-

First off, I'd suggest you buy a new hard drive. You can find a small drive (80 GB..that's small these days) for around 50 bucks American. You probably won't find a drive any smaller than that.

That said, you should consider capturing your video with a DivX, or XviD codec, using 352x480 resolution. The CPU requirements are not too high at this resolution. You could easily capture your entire project into a Gigabyte or two.

The loss in quality, should be unnoticable, considering your source is VHS, and the time saved more than makes up for it.

Then definately go the DivX route. The quality is an excellent trade for the size.
