  1. my divx is 720x336 and when i convert to svcd, the picture looks squished from side to side. since svcds are 480x480, is this normal? my video arrange method is full screen keep aspect ratio and my source aspect ratio is set to 1:1 (VGA). i've tried changing it to 4:3 and 6:9 display. so is there a way to fix this or should it just look fine once its burned and played in my dvd player?

It will look squished if you view it in Windows Media Player!...it should look just fine on you TV though. If you want to make sure then download a proper MPEG2 player such as Videolan (find it in the Tools section).
Any SVCD I make looks squished from side to side if I play it back in WMP...But Videolan plays it back exactly as it will look on your TV.

  4. I have one newbie question:

I tried to make a svcd from divx with TMPGEnc exactly like it says on this site. It all went OK, but when I press "star encoding immediately" OK it says:

You are trying to create MPEG-2 file.
To playback MPEG-2 file, DVD player software needs to be installed on your system....

I DO have a DVD player on my pc, so what's the problem?

I don't think there is a problem..I think thats just a standard message that TMPGenc throws up when creating an svcd.

To play back an svcd on your PC you need to have an MPEG2 player installed...(it will play back in WMP but will not have the correct aspect ratio, hence the above query)...try videolan as I suggested above.

Even though you have a DVD player (you mean a DVDrom drive yes?) on your PC you will still need to have a DVD/MPEG2 software player installed to watch the svcd on your PC.

If I'm not mistaken that is a first time message that is more of a piece of advice rather than a warning, I think you can choose to 'not show message again'

  7. ...the problem is, that after i get this message, it says also that this file( lets say: blow.mpg) CAN NOT BE CREATED... so i cant do the svcd (and i DO have the dvd-rom AND the dvd playing software)

Could it be that the mpeg2 trial grace period has expired in your version of TMPGEnc? You're only allowed to make mpeg2 (SVCD) for 30 days after installation.

  10. it says: the file film.mpg can not be created

yesterday it said a couple of times that i need a mpeg-2 or dvd player and that the mpeg-2 cannot be played without it... but maybe i do need some extra mpeg-2 plug-in somewhere, just for the svcds??

no, its not expired, i have it only 2 days

  11. no you won't need an extra plug-in to encode svcd.

the error message sound more like a basic operation system message to me.

Make sure that the file film.mpg doesn't already exist and might be read only - just try another name.

Make sure you selected the right drive to save your file. Maybee a trying to save it to a cd-rom drive by fault or you don't have the rights to write to this drive since it is shared with other users?

Re-Installing TMPeg could also help maybee - just try couldn't get worser

  12. I got that same message yesterday. I clicked past it and went ahead and burned the mpeg (2). Everything turned out fine. It plays great on my Pioneer DV-250 but I have heard that just about anything will play on this player.

  13. well, now it finally works!! could it be because i installed I-Video cd player in the mean time??
it only works(the svcds) on my pioneer 454 tho, on the pc no way, with none of the programs

now i have 2 more questions:

it took 10 min to encode a 3 min clip, like 7 hours for the entire movie(with tmpgenc and nero). this is really too much. whats the fastest way(i didnt see any settings in nero)?

whats the program to encode also the subs in a svcd, from a divx movie?

    thanx!!!

What are your PC specs?, and what are you doing with Nero, just burning doesn't take any time or particularly special settings.
Filters in TMPG improve quality but lengthen the time taken to encode, are you using any?. I prefer quality over speed but each to his own eh!
7 hours sounds OK to me (unless your'e encoding on deep blue )

DOH!, answered the wrong post, . Stand down.

  15. i just found out why i wasnt able to make the svcds: because i tried to put the svcd file in a new(previously unexisting) folder. but if i put the svcd output file in an existing folder(lets say, in the same as the source) it will work no probs.
    did y'all know that??

    I do now.
I usually encode to my desktop, It's easy to see where I'm up to during batch encoding.
