  1. I am capturing video using Virtual Dub and would like to know what codec I should use to get the best results?

My end product is a DVD.

The universally accepted codec for capturing is the Huffy codec.
It is a 'lossless' compression codec so it does not reduce the quality of your capture.
Most other codecs drop video information (and quality) to reduce file size.

It's in the 'Tools' section of this site under 'Codecs'.
