  1. I've found various ways to clean up an avi file with filters like those in VDub but after I convert the file to an mpeg file with TMPEG, there are some artifacts and I'd like some advice on how to minimize or remove them. Can anyone advise me on how to do this and what programs to use? Thanks all.

If you are happy with the tools you have found for AVI, then convert the MPEG-2 file into AVI and use those.

The simplest way I would recommend for this conversion would be the MPEG-2 enabled VirtualDUB. Open the MPEG-2 file, select the output compression codec and save the AVI.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  3. Perhaps I should have mentioned I'm refering to mpeg 1 type files. When I capture, I can clean up the artifacts that are on the compressed avi but once I convert to mpeg 1, there are some artifacts that I would still like to clean up. Thanks.

Encoding in MPEG-1 creates artifacts (square blocks visible while the film has increased action or motion or panning).

These are inherent results of the compression. If the MPEG-1 encoding is for VCD (1150kbps) then there is almost nothing you can do to remove them.

Encoding in VBR with min bitrate at 200, max at 1200 and avg at 1150 may help a bit.
