  1. i've been trying to download the nirvana mtv unplugged video which is about 45 mins long. the 1st file i got was an .avi thats 268 megs. there was video but no audio. i then downloaded a 793 meg .mpg file but this time there was no video. is there a codec i have to get to view the video on the mpg and to get audio on the avi? or is there no video and audio in those files? i think its strange to have an mpg file that large with only audio. i've downloaded the nimo lite pack but that doesnt fix my problem. here is what virtualdub says about the avi file
(if the pic doesnt work then http://geocities.com/metallismack123/vcdhelp )

however i can't open the mpg in virtualdub. a window pops up that says "MPEG Import Filter: pack synchronization error"
is there anyway to fix my problem?

try gspot. it will tell you what codecs the movie uses and if you got it installed. sometimes the problem i have is that the codec isn't configured properly.

  3. for the mpg in gspot, it says n.a for everything in the video and audio format sections, but in the directshow render section it says the source is MEDIASUBTYPE_MPEG2_PROGRAM, the splitter is MPEG-2 Splitter, the audio media is MEDIASUBTYPE_MPEG2_AUDIO and the audio codec is InterVideo Audio Decoder-->Morgan Stream Switcher. there are blanks in video media and video codec.

for the avi in gspot, in the video format section, it says the ACC is DIVX and the name is DivX 4 (OpenDivX). in the audio format section it says the codec name is divx (same as wma) (0x0161) DivX Networks. and finally in directshow render, it says the source is MEDIASUBTYPE_Avi, splitter is AVI Splitter, video media is 4cc: DIVX, and video codec is DivX Decoder Filter. there are blanks in audio media and audio codec. it says all codecs are installed in video format and audio format sections. so is there anything wrong here?

anyway the only way i can hear audio in the avi is if i load it in windows movie maker.

i just tried to load the file into vcdeasy and it says "VCD1.1/2.0 requires MPEG1 files, not MPEG2 files." this means my mpg is svcd format right? is there a special codec to get to play svcd mpgs? shouldnt the nimo lite codec pack cover this?

You need an mpeg2 decoder. Install any software dvd player, and use this to play your mpg instead. Any trial version will do.

As for the avi, make sure you have at least divx 4 installed. just do a web search.

BTW, VCDEasy will load that file but you have to set it to SVCD instead of VCD.

Also you should uninstall the nemo codec pack immediately. It is really horrible and causes so many problems. Don't install a pack that loads a bunch of unnecessary codecs that will conflict with each other, just download and install the particular codecs that you actually need.

  5. thanks. i got the Elecard MPEG2 Codec and everything works fine now...well except for the avi but i dont need that anymore now that the mpg is working.
