I am using VirtualDub,TMPGenc, and ULEAD....could someone tell me what codecs I absolutely have to use.
The reason I ask is I think I have downloaded every Coded that is on the market while trying to learn.

You absolutely have to have the codecs that were used when your source file was created, whatever they may be. Without them you cannot play or convert your video. Many people like to use one of the codec packs like Nimo, while others will install only the bare minimum that are required for their purposes. Codec packs are what I call the "shotgun" approach and they work most of the time. Like I tell everyone, get Gspot from the Tools section. It will tell you the required audio and video codecs for any file and if you have them installed.
