I'm having a werid problem on my computer. I don't know if it becuase I downloaded something or did anything but it won't let me restart or shut the computer off. What can be the problem?

When I go to start and click on shut down it doesn't do anything. The restart doesn't work either. I tired shutting it down with Alt+Ctrl+Del and still nothing. I have to take the power out to shut the computer.

Can anyone help me with this.

I also have another question about re-installing XP. Is there a way to just re-install xp while I still keep all my files and programs or do I lose them?

I have a link from Microsoft Knowledge Base about your problem and don't know if this would help you. Check out: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814761

With Windows 2000, I can keep my personal files in the system in OS re-installation. There is a R for repair using a WinXP disc. I think you need to re-install all of the post factory programs and upgrades. Just read your WinXP help and carefully check for options best for you.

I also suggest you backup your data including all your personal files into a CD or into another computer before any installation repair or clean re-install. Check out: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;312368

Right before my hard drive crapped out, I had very similar problems.
