  1. I am greatly confused with different threads that I read that covers this subject. So to settle the questions, I am posting this topic.

What is the maximum capacity of a DVD media? I heard numbers around 4.489 GB but should we try to fill it entirely...and if not, what is a practical maximum to fill a blank DVD?

Using InstantCopy, I set my data size to 4.69 GB (by oversizing with the F5 key). When I look at the size of the resultant folder containing the pdi files, it has the following numbers 4.46 GB (4,795,746,657 bytes). Which one is correct...4.46GB or 4,795,746,657 bytes? What size should we shoot for for the resultant folder so that it can be burned properly onto a DVD. What data size by the use of oversizing in InstantCopy should we set to to get a resultant folder that can be burned onto a DVD?

Since the file size is different on a computer versus a DVD media, do I need to divide either the 4.46 GB or 4,795,746,657 bytes by 1.048576 to get the exact size of the files?

PLEASE...Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  2. From my experience with Instant copy you have to set the slider to around 4.60 to get the 4.29gb. (4.31 is the max) .Some are different than others I think it has to do with how much audio you cut out.Good Luck

  3. Thanks for the quick reply ,

You suggest an InstantCopy setting of 4.60 to get a resultant folder of 4.29 GB (4.31 GB max).

Is the 4.31 GB max on the computer or on the DVD (my understanding is that 4.31 GB on the computer equals 4.11 GB on a DVD since 4.31/1.048576=4.11)? I have read from "http://www.deano.dsl.pipex.com/GUIDE/2big.htm" that 4.489 GB is the max for a DVD blank. Which is truly the max...4.31 or 4.489GB?

Does anyone know what is truly my size of my resultant folder which I see by looking at property of the folder... 4.46 GB (4,795,746,657 bytes)? Is it 4.46 GB or is it 4,795,746,657 bytes?

I am also trying to backup Crimson Tide which contains 1 layer. Therefore, I assume that DVD Decrypter is all that I need. When I process it through DVD Decrypter, I end up with a resultant folder with the size of 4.35 GB (4,672,866,528 bytes). Can I go ahead and burn that resultant folder onto a DVD disc? If the 4.31 GB is the max as described by "mcmacky", then will the 4.35 GB (or 4.67 GB if that is the true size) fit onto an empty DVD disc?

Thanks for any and all help!!

    LOL

in my guide I state a blank DVD is around 4489MB which = 4.37GB = 4,700,000,000 bytes give or take a few bytes

    It's actually 4482MB that's available to a 4.7Gbytes not GB(gigabytes) , but Nero states 4489MB on a blank that I put in

  5. Thanks for the link and the info....it is clearer now...
From what you are saying, I can go ahead and burn the Crimson Tide folder containing 4.35 GB (4,672,866,528 bytes) since a blank DVD can contain 4.37 GB (4,700,000,000 bytes).

What process goes on in InstantCopy where the setting of 4.60 results in folder containing files amounting to 4.29 GB?

it all depends on the Title

main movies are normally 90-94% of what they are actually predicted, but extras can be anything

I have predicted an extra title to 50% from 200MB to 100MB and it came out at 195MB!

you just gotta guess, but I use the guide as a correction tool if you have plenty of options
