  2. DVD Decrypter is the 'easiest' choice because it does a lot more than smartripper. It does everything smart ripper does but also:

You can rip a DVD-5 image, then burn it.
You can see the region, total disc size, layers, etc.
You can burn any iso image file
    Scan media
    etc.

However, there are some discs I can't rip with DVD Decrypter and i have to use smartripper. Given that both are freeware I'd get both

SmartRipper is good, well designed and free.

DVD Decrypter is AMAZING, well designed, and free, and will do a lot that SmartRipper can't.

But as with any program, it's what you find easiest / most comfortable that will be the "better" program.

Download them both, use them both and judge for yourself. They're small, easy to use, and free.

That's not true, I use Smartripper when I want to strip .m2v and .ac3 files from .vob files on my hard drive (used quite often). DVD Decrypter won't do that, it only will rip from a DVD-ROM drive.

  9. DVD Decrypter is by far the better ripper. dose the same thing smart ripper dose and more. so smart ripper can strip out the ac3 and m2v file form the hard drive. big deal if some one did a poll if they could only have one ripper what would it be? i bet they would be atleast 90% would want DVD Decrypter.

  12. For me Smartripper is better. This is because I often strip m2v and ac3 streams.

I have read a few people claim that Decryptor does MORE things that Smart Ripper. That isn't true. It may do "things" that Smart Ripper won't in certain situations, but Smart Ripper does things that Decryptor doesn't. Just to name a couple of things...Decryptor seems to be more sensitive to certain things and not rip certain disks, while Smart Ripper almost always will handle business. One thing imparticular is when trying to rip an RW disk that isn't formatted. DVD Decryptor just WON'T RIP IT. Plain and simple..it will tell you that the disk is NOT formatted and won't allow you to rip.

That sucks when I'm testing out things on my RW which of course is NOT formatted. However, SmartRipper doesn't give you that message and will rip up that RW just like any other disk. I can give other examples but to say that Decryptor is more versatile is innacurate. To say that BOTH programs are INCREDIBLE and could EASILY be offered for a price, right along with IFOEdit and DVD2SVCD, DVD2DVDR, PULLDOWN, etc...well, that's an accurate statement. Both programs should be used to meet your need at that time. Both are EXCELLENT programs like most others in the tools section of this forum.

I didn't say I had a problem ripping in Decryptor with an RW, I said Decryptor WON'T rip an UNFORMATTED RW. Unformatted being the key word there.

    Red Lion -

many dvd drives (and from what I've read, MOST Sony drives) are locked at 2x when ripping from a commercial dvd.

by contrast, I have an old 8x generic dvd-rom drive (Raito? something like that) and DVD Decrypter can get the rip speed up around 6.5-7x.

So you might want to look around for a non-Sony dvd-rom - apparently some Lite-On drives can get fast rips going.

but if you stick with the Sony, you are going to be locked at 2x.

  19. At the moment i have only 2 drive bays i took out a dvd rom to get the sony in and i need my other bay for a liteon cd-rw
i know the sony will record cd-rw but it wont do efm encoding...
so im stuck at 2x unless there is a way to change it
