Converted loads of .avi files in the past with no problems to svcd .Last couple of dvd rips ive had have only been a bout 120 meg x 2 each -when i convert theses in usuall way pic is well blocky-anyway round this or is it just cus original file is so small?

Low bitrate in the original = small file size = blocky/crappy picture
Don't know what you're converting with, but in TMPGEnc you can go to the Quantize Matrix tab, select Soften Block Noise and crank both numbers up to 50 or so. Might help some.
Also, check the resolution of the original, you shouldn't be trying to go from a lower res. to higher res. as that causes poor quality. If you're using standard SVCD res. then that might be the case. You really can't get that great of quality with a AVI the size of 120MB.
