  1. I am new to this, and i have been able to use virtdub in the past to create a wav file to use in tmpge. i have since tried to create a wav file from this file and it says that "no audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format". Could someone please walk me through how to make this file into a wav so that i can use it in tmpge.
    thanks
Below is some info from the file that may be useful

    Frame size: 640x272fps, 23.976fps

    decompressor: divx mpeg-4 low motion

    sample rate 48000

    channel 5(stereo)

    compression unkown tag 2000

any help would be much appreciated

can you play this file and hear audio?

It looks from the error message that it uses an audio codec that's not present on your system.

I believe there was a news post recently dealing with how to identify codecs in video files, I'm not sure if they covered audio codecs or just video, but you may wish to search for it.

Otherwise, can you give some more detail on the file? Is this something you captured? Where did the file come from?

First, download and run Gspot from the Tools section. It will tell you what codecs are required for this file and if you have them. It looks like you have AC3 sound (Dolby surround) in this file and you first need to get the AC3 codec and install it, try a google search or look in the Tools section again.

I use Goldwave to extract AC3 sound and to convert to Wav. It's simple: start Goldwave, load your AVI, select Save As and you're done. There are other programs to convert AC3, Headac3he and AC3tool to name two. You'll find the steps to use use either of them here: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=91588

You'll find it in the Tools section under codecs. Once it's installed you can then use Goldwave, or you can use Vdub and either Headac3he or AC3tool. For the second option the guide is here: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=91588
