Is it possible to modify the information shown by a utilility, such as DVDInfo, on a new DVD-R's pre-recorded leadin? If this is feasible, then this would appear to offer an alternative to modifying the firmware on drives such as the Pioneer A05 to defeat the internal list of "ok" software. Just edit in a manufacturer leadin that the A05 likes.

No, it can't - it's "etched" into the stamper that makes the pre-grove that the writer tracks like it is with CD-R's, I think you will find.
There are some hacked firmwares out there that will allow you to write at higher speeds on any media, but there's such a variance in quality out there at the moment that I personally don't risk it.
