Does anybody know a way to convert svcd subs to permanent subs ?

I have a bunch of movies i SVCD format - all with SVCD subs wich cannot be showed on my stand alone DVD player. Now I really want to see this movies with the subtitles but I have no idea on how to convert the subs.
After the conversion of the subs I hope to end up with a SVCD movie with permanent subtitles.
And please don't sugest that I rip the movies once again while it is just not possible.
