  1. What's the lowest sample rate & bit quality one could get away with and still have good sound? VHS stereo source.

I assume that it will leave more room for better video quality with less frame rate drop.

As a novice to capturing I would think that if the PC is quick enough you would not get dropped frames due to audio codec even if using high quality PCM but then again I don't know too much about capturing directly to mpeg either. You could try radium mpeg layer-3 codec (mp3) at 128 kbps which should give good quality and good compression.

  3. Is it Hi Fi stereo? From a TV broadcast, a purchased tape, or a camcorder?

For best sound from a Hi Fi source, 256k is best, but you could get away with less. MPEG2 for video doesn't use MP3, but MP2, which requires a little more bitrate to sound good - at least 160, but the more the better.

If your source is lower quality, you might get away with less.

  4. I tried a test run from TV(Saved by the Bell) eeww! With 128 mpeg2 Audio. TV @nywhere card.

Sounds ok, do I sense a little extra base?
Looks fine, not much different from the original broadcast.

Next up will be old VHS, store bought and tapes of stuff. Don't think there is a lot of HI FI in it. Actualy I don't think there is any.

Last, the cream of the crop transfer Laserdisc to dvd. It's the non THX version of Star Wars. I guess that would be HI FI.

  5. If there's extra bass, it's probably coming from your soundcard - encoding shouldn't do that.

Most store boughts should have a Hi-Fi soundtrack. Your VCR is Hi Fi, right? If not, that would be a wise $80 investment.

LD will definitely be hi fi.

The bass is when I play it in the DVD player. Don't think it's a big deal.

  7. I had the base setting up on my audio card settings. Hmm that should not effect it cause the capture card captures the audio then plays it out to the sound card.

    It's just me.

"Damn fool, I knew you were going to say that."
