Greetings all.
1) Please post a response if you have a DVD player that plays SVCDs that are made "the wrong way", i.e. burnt .bin files as Disc Image using Toast. This was how I started doing them, and since it worked in my player I assumed all was well. Now that my player is broken, I'm having a very difficult time finding a good replacement - reburning 800+ CDs isn't really an option. Pls state your model number - thanks a lot.
2) One nice feature of some late models, is the ability to play MPEG1/2-files straight from a ISO DVD-R/W without authoring. Makes life a lot easier when putting a lot of SVCD files away for future use (I run a server, and backing them up this way in a viewable format would be great). I've tested two players with this function, but am far from satisfied with the result. Visible pixelisation several times a minute, video slows down then speeds up to get in sync etc - is it supposed to be that poor, or have I just tested 2 players that don't handle the function very well?
Oh, and a little tidbit for you... the DVD Chapter indexing goes by data location, not time location. I recently found this as I downgraded a DVD Video track by 20% to make a backup fit on one DVD-R, and replaced the old VOBs with the new, degraded ones. The chapter selection worked, but the entire film was dealt with in 16 chapters instead of 20, so... didn't know that before, but I do now
Thanks for your help.

Couldn't you just get the same player you have now? Or are you trying to stay away from the brand because it doesn't work?
Another thing you could try is to find a DVD player that comes from the same company - if they support something in one player, it should probably be supported in a later player.
Sorry I can't help more! -
The player I had has been discontinued, and for some reason the later models fail to play these SVCDs. The old model allowed turning off PBC and then re-starting the disc, whereas now (God knows why) the player switches to black screen for 1 second and then goes back to the "stop screen", believing it has already played the disc. Trust me, I've tried e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. Not really crazy about the idea of reburning, but at least it'd save some room - maybe I have to make xDVDs now of it all (you now; extracting the MPG, demuxing it, remuxing as DVD, ifogen, tocgen, burn... sheesh)
