  1. Ok, I think I have this problem isolated, though I'm still not 100% sure why it's happening. Maybe someone else can shed some light on this...

After reading Kai's earlier posts about KP's and the possible reasons they can occur, I decided to try and isolate this. I'm running 10.2.3 on a dual-867 MDD, 42 version 1.5.2 (not 'b' yet).

The problem was that every time I tried a transcode with 42 (Divx, SVCD, doesn't matter), I'd get a KP about 1/3 of the way through. Every time like clockwork.

My usual process was that I'd make a DVD image of the DVD itself, then run 42 against the image (I do this because I'll usually run a bunch of transcodes against the same DVD while experimenting with different settings in 42). I was also using an external firewire drive at the time. So the image would be on the external firewire HD, I'd mount the image with Toast, then run 42 and save the files to my internal HD.

After some trial and error, I realized that if the DVD image was on the firewire drive, I would get a KP 100% of the time no matter which drive I saved the files to in 42. If the DVD image was on the internal drive, I would never get a KP, no matter which drive I saved the files to in 42. This is 100% reproducable so far.

Oh yeah, and these KP's are never logged in the panic.log.

Any ideas on this? I also use the external firewire HD for digital audio multitracking and have never had any other problems...

  2. First of all, thank you for you resistance on this!

It seems that your methodology of using disk images is a root cause. Disk Image use is not encouraged and not officially supported.

The fact that the KP isn't getting logged its bothersome, but i've seen it before.

I can only suggest that instead of using dmgs, use real disks, or use disk copy to mount them instead of toast. and see if it makes a difference.

yeh i'd have to agree that it is most likely a disc image issue. I've personally always used the DVD themselves when using forty-two. I generally do most of my conversions on an external firewire drive AND external firewire DVD-rom drive as well and i haven't had a KP associated to forty-two ever. So my thought is that it is definitely disc image related.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind. Withering my intuition leaving all these opportunities behind.

  4. K & B,

My bad, I thought images were supported.

    Thanks for the speedy replies!

  5. When we were testing remember how someone said they got them to work, and i was like "Okay, if you say so.."?

Well, I'm not conviced that this works in any reliable way, YMMV, etc

Sorry if this has caused you unwarranted grief
