  1. I took a 55 min divx and converted it to mpeg 1 using
TMPGenc, using the 2 pass VBR template found on this website
    (tools section).
Quality wise the result is great, it plays fine on the PC
but during fast movement it gets jerky on the TV.

Do you think the cause for this problem could be that the
original DivX uses 23.97 FPS and the converted MPEG 25 FPS?
Reason i used 25 FPS is cause the template for 2 pass VBR
defaulted to 25 (also defaults to PAL but i changed that to
    NTSC).

I don't usually have problems playing VCDs/SVCDs on my
DVD player (Pioneer Dv-343), this is my first divx to vcd
    attempt

Any clues on what might cause the choppy playback on fast
action scenes on the TV but not the PC would be appreciated.

If you use to play with an NTSC DVD player you will have to use 3-2 pulldown to make it play at 29.97 FPS
Pioneer can not play at diferent fps then 29.97
Some players can play diferent FPS but not Pioneer.
So...you can youe that template but change with 23.976 FPS and use NTSC and 3-2 pulldown option.
    That's it.
    Good Luck.

Thats complete bullshit. I have a Pioneer 535 and it can play VBR VCD's.

    Try this to encode vcd's
    settings using DVD2AVI and TMPEGenc.

    Use the following.
I use cladDVD 1.70 to rip the movie files only from the DVD.
Then I open DVD2AVI and use the following settings
Video: iDCT Algorithm - IEEE-1180 reference
    Field Operation - Forced Film
    Color Space - YUV
YUV > RGB - TV Scale

    Audio: Track Number - 1
    Channel Format - Dolby Digital
    Dolby Digital - Decode

    Then save project.

Open up project .dv file with TMPEGenc.
    Video Setting
    Stream Type- MPG1
    Size 352 x 240
    Aspect Ratio - 4.3 525 line NTSC
    Frame Rate 29.97
    Rate control mode - Automatic
Motion Search Procision - Highest Quality

    ADVANCED tab
    Video Source Type - Non-Interlace
Field order - Bottom field first
Source Aspect Ratio - 16:9 for wide screen / 4:3 for full screen
Video Arrange method - No Margin (Keep Aspect)

    QUARTIERIZE MATRIX tab
    Put checks in the
    Output YUV data
    Use floating point DCT

    No hit the ENCODE Button

I use a VBR at 29.97 NTSC 16:9 Aspect and it comes out
    perfect.

  4. DIVX Conversion

If you want to use 25 FPS then you have to change the template to PAL for it to work on your standalone. Thats your problem here.

Doesn't matter If it play VCD it will play both formats Pal or NTSC.

  6. Going from 23.976fps to 25fps gives choppy/jerky playback. Solutions are sticking to 23.976fps since most players support that or if you really need 25fps speed it up like this:

Open the 23.976fps source in VirtualDub. Save the audio as uncompressed wav. Save the video with direct stream copy and change the frame rate to 25fps. Durations of video and audio will differ now. Use Cool Edit 2000 to speed audio up to match duration of video.
