I just started using ULEAD DVD workshop, and I guess I'm missing something. Here the problem:

when I encode with TMPGEnc it produces a .m2v file and a .wav file, but DVD workshop doesn't recognise the .m2v file as a valid movie format. (it works fine if I encode to a .mpg . ie both audio and video etc.)

So, what am I doing wrong, or what should I do different?

    TIA.

DVD WS should accept the .m2v file, so long as it is DVD-compliant. What parameters did you use in TMPGEnc? Try choosing one of the DVD presets. If DVD WS doesn't accept that, there's definitely something fishy going on.

    Thanks for the reply Fred.

    OK I tried it again.

First time I used TMPGEncPlus, wizard, chose to have 352x576 VBR. Workshop wouldn't accept it, Sonic MyDVD would, and burned OK

Second time, with a completely different avi file, I used TMPGEnc (not plus) used standard 720x576 CBR 8000kbps DVD template (from wizard). No changes made anywgae. Workshop STILL wouldn't read the .m2v file.

I had a few old encodes lying around(which worked previously in ULEAD DVD movie factory) and they won't read in either. All were to DVD standard.

I would really like to hear from anyone who has made a DVD with DVD worshop using a .m2v file. I agree that it should work, but the evidence tells me otherwise.

  4. Just drag the raw AVI directly in Ulead DVD Workshop. I got better results (Video quality) when I did this. Skip the TMPGenc conversion! It took 4-5 hours to compile but thats the same amount of time TMPGEnc would have taken.

Interesting. I tried that with other ULEAD products and IMO definately did not get as good results as I get with TMPGEnc.

Also, there is the small issue of frame serving. Not sure if that works with Workshop, and is an essential part of my process, as I like the vfw capture drivers I have better than the wdm ones, but they don't work under win2k (let's not get into wrappers/mappers) so I do my capturing under win98...no NTFS and the avis are definately big! Guess I could always chop it into bits and have them a separate chapters, but that isn't something I would want to do.

Anyway, I may go back and try a small file with workshop when I get time to see if I can agree with you.

In the meantime, I still think workshop should handle .m2v files, as moviefactory does (at a fraction of the proce). I thought I would get some response from experienced users here, but I may have to go back and try the Ulead site! (yes, that is a challenge!)

    An added comment:

I went to the Ulead site, and after much searching I found that there is a 1.3 patch which, amongst other things allows you to replace the audio track. Perhaps this patch is needed to allow an independent video only file to be load also (or loading the video file tries to make the audio load automatically - as other tools do - and this won't work without the patch.) Either way, I can't test this, as I am still using a demo verion of 1.2 and you can't get the patch unless you are registered! So, I have no way of knowing....anyone who owns a copy have an opinion?????

I have a registered copy with the 1.3 patch installed, and I can confirm that it will accept .m2v files. It's possible that this feature was introduced in version 1.3. I can find no documentation to confirm nor deny that supposition.

In the words of Phil Hartman imitating Ed McMahon, "You are correct sir, YES!!!!"

That is indeed your problem. DWS did not become capable of handling m2v files until version 1.3.

I don't believe Ulead lets you see the 1.3 update patch unless you've paid for the program and become a registered user. There's a spot on their site where registered users can sign in, and then the 1.3 update will be there.
