note: this is a theory of mine, and I have no proof of it's truth, hence the "conspiracy theory" title. Just gives you something to think about![]()
Why would Pinnacle offer a $20 MIR on a brand new DVD copying program, that would most likely sell like hotcakes for it's full price? How about this: Hollywood studios and/or the FBI is "tagging" everyone who sends in for this rebate. Why? To keep track of your movie renting habits (Blockbuster, Netflix, etc), and possibly checking in on you in the future to see if you have any illegal backups. Make sense to anyone else?
As stated above, this is purely a theory of mine. If nothing else, it may dissuade people from making illegal backups![]()

Most companies offer some sort of extra incentive to buy products in their initial release. This is especially important when you have competing products already released and more to come.
Your theory is interesting, but for Pinnacle to be in cahoots with the government in that manner would be self defeating for pinnacle in that it would be aiding in a war against the product they sell.
What incentive would Pinnacle have in doing this?

My take on this is:
When you are offered a MIR, the company sells your name and info to some marketing firms (that's who actually pays) and you will get more mail junk in the nearest future, at least...
Then again, US DOJ vs Microsoft deal didn't stop US gov. from ordering all sorts of software from MS (military use and so on), the SW you'll never even think of... -

Hey, mp3superfreak!
This is a joke, right? Either (in the words of Captain Kirk in refrence to Spock) you've done too much LDS. Or, you are a member of the MPAA, which in that case

Are you all silent b/c you're scared? Or maybe you are out shopping to fullfill those "backups" that aren't quite legit.

"Conspiracy Theory" was indeed an excellent movie...Patrick Stewart and especially Mel Gibson make it that much better.
But as for your idea...then why not "tag" anyone who simply purchases the program. And for that matter "tag" anyone who has purchased DVD2One as well. Afterall, they already know who you are and where you live if you ordered by credit card (which is the vast majority).
They don't need to rely on a stupid mail-in rebate to "tag" someone. They can simply find out who purchases the program.
However, for anyone to "tag" you and then later give a "drop in visit" would not be legal. If you were taken to court for violating copyright laws you could have the case thrown out due to the Unconstitutional nature of the opposition's evidence.
Anyway, you shouldn't be afraid of someone coming after you unless you were doing something wrong. Perhaps that is where the problem lies in this situation. Either that or you work for some company that has a vested interest in people not getting their rebate money. Then again, you could just be another one of those guys who thinks it would be funny to scare people out of money that they are entitled to.
My advice to everyone who purchases Instant Copy. Get your rebate for the product and enjoy using it for the legitimate purpose that it was intended. As you all know IC 7 does not include code for DeCSS. Therefore they aren't violating any copy protection. If you are using the program on media that is encrypted then you have already broken the law. Same as DVD2One. These people are smart not to include anything that would make their programs illegal.
So just enjoy what you paid for and don't be worried by internet guys who like to pull a prank now and then. I mean, we have all received the email that says "get rich now while sitting at home on your ass eating chips and drinking beer". Geez, here I am 300 lbs. heavier and no money to show for it!!!!!!!!!! -

I didn't mean to get people scared of sending in their rebate, b/c I am most definitely going to send mine in. It was only a joke and us movie buffs with creative minds should appreciate the concept of my "Conspiracy Theory".
BTW, some people still use cash, and that purchase couldn't be traced....just FYI. -
If you're not doing anything "illegal"...you shouldn't have anything to worry about...feeling guilty about sending in that MIR?
