unsupported movie.....after encoding

i am totally baffled ..!!
whats the diffrence.
DVD-SCREENER.XVID-NINLA
AC3.DVL.SHAREREACTOR
DVDSCREENER.XVID-QIX.SHAREREACTOR
I have movies on my drive that i want to put on disk but everytime i encode (nero,TMPGEnc) all i get is a FILE! Which unlike some other movies will not play on anything after encoding.
It is taking me a very long time to figure out what to do i have downloaded codecs, players,.. more codecs including xvid and divx3&4
and still no sucess. Do i need to re-encode to DIVX first !! .
I have done some films from avi with no problems before now so this is frustrating the ell out of me because i thought it was a similar procedure.. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME UNDERSTAND WHAT IS INVOLVED

I suggest you start by reading some of the guides here:

Find the one (or ones) that apply to what you are trying to do. Often it is necessary to creat your own 'guide' by selecting steps from other guides for each part of the process.

One important thing to remember is that a .avi file is simply a wrapper format and the actual audio/video within can take many forms and so present differnt obstacles to conversion.

Read, experiment and read again. When you come unstuck, come back here and ask specific questions giving as much info as you can on what you have done so far. That way you stand a good chance of finding some one who can help solve oyur problems.
