I drive a... foot up yo azz! ....in all seriousness though, my car is only one year newer then yours TGPO...it's a 1990 Jeep Cherokee...but because down here in Miami....we got the hook up.....uhhhhh.....It was a breeze to customize that bad boy. Indiglo gauges, exhaust, rims, Insane Sound system, custom PPG Paint Job.....that's just for starters.....this car destroys ANY Cherokee made in the last ten years...they make em all with plastic crap these days..just like most other cars and SUV's.....I love my ride to say the least!

Car, Bicycle, and Shoes.
Abandoned public transport quite a while ago. Buses always seem to require waiting too long in the cold and the rain in order to pay money to get somewhere a few seconds faster than you could have walked. Trains are a bit nicer when they work right (get on board, sleep or read until you read the destination), but are expensive and always seem to involve a huge amount of changing, running around or waiting on cold seats, and then your walkman's batteries run out just as the train pulls in
Car may get stuck in traffic, be more expensive than even the train, and cut you off a little socially (from all those interesting strangers and single-serving friends)... oh yeah, and be the statistically most dangerous mode of travel... but sure is faster and way way way WAY more flexible. Public transport can't take me up to the 2nd user computer outlet in that there mountain town inside of my lunchbreak, or give me an easy way of carting the monitor back. Can't get me to that library 85 miles away at an 80mph average. Can't guarantee my warmth and dryness (or coolness in summer) or being able to keep the radio on. Can't help carry five times my own weight in gear. The list goes on.
Plus if i motor conservatively, the fuel actually costs a good 10% less than train tickets. Enough long journeys, finding free places to park each end, with a cheapo machine such as this, could actually work out to a saving on the insurance and purchase costs..

But then, there's places even the car doesn't work too well (such as the local town centre) or you just want to get a bit of exercise whilst slowly touring the local beauty spots on a sunny day. Then comes the bike.

And when you don't even feel up to cycling, or it's a lazy day... feet are still a good way to get around.


TGPO at the risk of being kicked from the forums, I'd just like to say until you posted that pic I thought I would probably have the smallest, least desirable PoS on here Man my subcompact VW Polo "squareback" looks massive in comparison to that cute little thing, like a station wagon parked next to an escort

1991, 1043cc (a big throbbing 64 cubic inches, for the americans) 4-banger, with a crazy single-point injector system giving it just enough of a power boost over the older carburetted model to be able to keep moving with an added catalyser (all of 45 watt-standardised brake horsepower after cat-tax).
Some days it feels like I'm flying (the air is still and the atmospheric pressure is high..). Other days I really wanna get out and push (windy and about 800bar). Hit triple figures all of like three or four times, and it always involved a fairly substantial hill.
Still, it doesn't dull my spirit. In fact I think I'm in danger of developing an automotive Mussolini complex. But I wouldn't ever rice it. Too much pride. It's got new wheeltrims and some aftermarket fog lights (as I'm by the sea..) but that's about it. Need to put aside some time to spray a simple but attractive geometric design down the side to hide the badly botched touch-up-paint job

I'd rather be driving Energy80's Peugeot 406 though. The french really know a thing or two about making genuinely rapid cars that run off truck fuel... if the Citroen 1.9TDs are anything to go by (all essentially the same manufacturer IIRC) then its neck snappingly fast but probably costs less to run than my little dub-Maus.




It helps to think of it as the front end of a boil-washed Passat (it really does look like it if you take a front-end shot at the right angle) with the rear end of an anorexic Golf

Well I drive two cars, a 98 Cavalier and this 71 Mini! Course the mini needs lots of work, which it will get when I get out of this desert. And the mini is loads more fun to drive than even the 69 Camero I used to have, though not as fast I admit .



Note: this is almost the same as mine, only thing different is wheels and cool little headlights.

No real diss intended TGPO, I was aiming for something nastier than yours (Fiat Panda... kind of like a Festiva without all the creature comforts, safety, performance or handling) because it's just the epitome of cheap gets-you-about motoring. Would have cost about two weeks wages maximum (at a minimum wage job) and as much again to insure and tax.

Oddly the parents weren't too happy about that, so i've ended up blowing about 3 times as much each way on the VW and so i'm now broke. Today it started making an odd and expensive sounded CLONK noise from the rear end on starting up, and a creaking sound from the same place on making left turns. Very worrying.

(for the record, i'm a final year undergrad; lower middle class (definately "working") family so we're just about ticking by with loans and all but hardly flush; and my mind is fried from doing 3/8ths of the finals project write-up in about 1/3 of the intended time (experiments ran long from misbehaving plants) so his/her comments were just a bit too much to take - good job you locked it before fire came from nose. Having to put together a 12-page doublespaced piece of original research, from 20+ individual journal reports, is not exactly that comparable to the goddamn common sense of "i'm not the only person in the world, perhaps someone else has asked this already so i won't make an ass of myself", or "read all of the instructions BEFORE starting the exercise". Especially the last one; I forsee that user dying horribly under their car trying to replace a clutch cable or something after reading to the point "jack the car up" and then climbing underneath without getting to "make sure the parking brake is firmly engaged". Raggh. But, to flame gently, I can't see them ever discovering about such mental challenges without being told about them, much as I will never know the sheer grind of a PhD thesis and the intellect of those who produce them, except by looking at those used as source..)

I'd much prefer to be in the Citroen Xantia my dad was going to give me on my 17th, before he got laid off and therefore poor (a touch below Ford Contour level, for reference). Still an attractive design, comfortable as a dream (pneumatic suspension), 2-litre 16v engine, A/C, etc... only problem being the very slushy automatic, but I could live with that.

I was going to get it as a present, and he was going to hold on to the merc convertible he'd saved for ages to get. However, theres no way either of us would be able to afford that now til I've been gainfully employed above the McDonalds level for about a year (the merc is long sold) oh well

Hm, ran out of fuel on a country road today (been "filling" rather too sparingly). That was "fun". Lucky there was that spare gallon can in the back. Guess I know just how far down the needle goes now. Always beware cars without a "reserve" light.

Small wonder I'm broke A vanishingly rare £10 note barely covers 3 of the big ones (or 13.5 of the small) - IF you know the right gas stations to go to. One for the spare can and two for the tank.

Aaaghh, I think after I started dissing it online, my car has psychically picked up on this and is trying to kill me.. maybe not in the real sense, but financially perhaps.
Found out what the CLONK noise was. It was the exhaust falling apart. Again. But in a wholly different way to before. (Mmm, 308-V8 sound from a 64-i4.. without the same level of soundproofing a V8 has though! ouch). Patched it up with a flexiwrap, a whole load of silicon sealant and some metal tape, supposedly that'll all hold tight once the sealant's been on 24h and hardens, and be perfectly safe. We'll see.. it's either this £7.50 repair, or £75 at the garage.. urk.. Right after the clutch cable, and not long before it'll need oil & filter change, tappet adjustment, new tyres, new brake pads all round & new discs... nooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, that's one advantage to having a small, nasty car, besides it being less than hard work to jack up - all the bits are cheap. I might bitch about how much those other things are, but really, they're peanuts and it just seems a lot because I'm a student. Can't imagine facing down £400 for a set of new tyres on something bigger. £400... I could get two mid-80s metros for that and make some really huge powered boots out of them. Heck for a change of tyres and freshened fluids on a Contour or Taurus (to keep it americanised ) I could probably get a whole new dub.

Now there's an idea. Earning more than the average student? Why bother maintaining your crappy old car when you can just junk it or sell it to someone clueless and get another? Sounds like a winning scheme.

It's definately trying to kill me though, by toppling. Any time I try to get it up on the axle stands it takes 3 or 4 tries before I succeed.. one side keeps falling off before the other's fully jacked. Can't figure it out at all. Putting them on right. Car's defiantely getting a Christine complex. So far it hasn't fallen down once it's fully on the stands, but splurging all that gunk around the broken weld between the muffler and main pipe was a paranoid process.

you guys are wimps, real men ride motorcycles. I've got a 2002 Suzuki Hyabusa 1300-R, and a 1986 Suzuki GSXR-1100. I used to dragrace an 82 Suzuki Katana punched out to 1290 cc in Supercomp class. It ran mid 8's @ 150+ MPH. Hence the name racer-x.
