  1. I realise that this unit is the OEM version of the dru-500a. Does it have the same specs as the latest firmware that is available for the dru-500a. For one does the dw-u10a support 4x burning of +R discs???

    hardware-wise, basically 100% same.

    software-wise, dw-u10a bundles none.

firmware-wise, they're not the same and dw-u10a doesn't support 4x +R burning until you "upgrade" it to dru-500a with hacked firmware.

price-wise, dw-u10a should be cheaper (not always).

  3. I have the dw-u10a and mine came with nero and powerdvd. There is now a patch available from www.firmware-flash.com that changes your dw-u10a into a u500a.
Currently, as far as I know, there are 3 versions of firmware for the u10A -- 1.1a,1.1b and 1.1c. I have the 1.1a and have had no problems with it. I havent tried writing +R yet but it writes -R at 4x. Both the retial and oem will only read at 2x as far as I am aware.

  5. Hi,

Whats the point in flashing the U10a with the hack for the 500a. The firmware for the 500a is lower than the U10a. The u 10 a is up to 1.1 isnt the 500a still in ver 1.0?

If there are firmwares out for the u10a then you dont need to hack it to a 500a. Nero supports the drive you just need the latest version.

Dont go by the numbers are sony are essentially treating them as 2 different drives and so have 2 different sets of firmware. As far as I am aware the 1.1c is equivalent to the 1.0g.

You are correct about NERO supporting both drives (and hence the reason I have not bothered to flash mine from 1.1a), but other software, like prassi, does not support the u10a but does support the u500A.
