hello!
I would like to know if a 16:9 aspect ratio is within standards for SVCD or CVD. If yes why does my player not play them correctly? The picture is all jumpy and wiggles from left to right.
Is it possible to encode working 16:9 svcds? If yes I would like to know how, so far I have been unsuccessful at doing this with TmpgEnc.

I'm not sure if the SVCD or VCD standards officially support the 16:9 ratio but, unfortunately very few dvd players support this feature anyway. It seems your stuck with 4:3.

Well, kind of cheating and may not be what you really want, but you could add black borders to preseve the 16:9 ratio of the content, but then encode to 4:3.

Well, if I encode in 4:3 and set the correct aspect ratio for my progressive 16:9 source video material I get enough black borders. 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom. It is not about having black borders in my movie it is just frustrating to encode everything in 4:3 although I own a 16:9 widescreen TV.
That is my problem. -
...ah! I defer to Adam on that. There are only a few DVD players that support 16:9 out and I doubt any VCD/SVCD players that do. God only knows what happens on those that do and support VCD or SVCD as well. I'm afraid your experience might be typical. You mention CVD, I expect you could do the CVD to 1/2 D1 DVD trick and have it playcorrectly through your DVD player. Don't know, but easy enough to do and worth trying.

Ah, sorry, should have given more details. CVD vid resolution is the same as 1/2 D1 DVD vid resolution. So if you de-mux the audio convert it to 48k from the 41K SVCD/CVD standard then re-mux it should be a fully compliant DVD standard file format. There are good guides here on the left. You then just author that onto a DVD-R and it should play fine.
Of course re-reading your post, I can guess that you want to play CD-R/RW based media. In which case probably ooops on my part. Doubt your player works with mini-DVDs (DVD burned onto a CD). So if you do what I suggest, you'll probably just end up with a non-standard SVCD that your player won't be able to deal with. I suggest read the guide under DVDR to the left. That will go into the details and give you a better idea what is likely to work. -
My player plays anything I feed it. the mini dvd thing you mentioned works fine as well but ti just can't deal with the 16:9 aspect ratio. But since it plays anything else I still assume that the error is on my part. I just can't find out what I am doing wrong. So far I seem to be the only person in the universe with these strange problems.

No, everyone has this problem. Very very few dvd players support the 16:9 aspect ratio flag in a VCD or SVCD, even dvd players that seem to play everything else. In all liklihood, this is something that just isn't supported by either of these standards. As far as miniDVD (cDVD) goes, its a completely non-standard format, and no dvd players officially support it, and incidentally only a handful of players can actually play them. It doesn't suprise me at all that your running into problems with the 16:9 aspect ratio here too. Like I said, your probably stuck with 4:3 unless you invest in a dvd burner and start making compliant dvds which officially support 16:9 and which have consistent hardware support for that aspect ratio.

Is there a list of players that support this? I don't see any info on this in the player list here on vcdhelp.com
