Keeping in mind that my Dazzle system captures to Mpeg-2 video, I capped some files intentionally at a file size of 3.85 Gig.(thinking they would fit easily onto a 4.7Gig DVD disk)
But when I went to author them into a DVD burn, I saw that they were WAY over 4.7Gig and the program warned me there would be errors if I tried to finalize the author/burning process.
So, I'd like to know what is the Max raw capped Mpeg-2 file size that would be able to fit onto a DVD after the authoring process?
3.4Gig. maybe?....or what?
Also, I added a bunch of transition effects to that 3.85Gig video cap file(before I learned that the file was already too large to author onto a DVD)which made the file about 4.2Gig with transitions....THAT resulted in a file that would have been over 6Gig according to the "warnings" my authoring/burning programs gave me.
Is there any rough kind of rule about how much transition effects increase a video file size?

"Signature"......
I use a Dazzle capturing system that Only lets me capture into Mpeg. So that is all I work with. I never do any DV/AVI video..... -
MPG2 720x480 (NTSC) format video with audio in MP1-L2, pcm or AC3 should be compliant for a DVD video file.

But you still need to author the Mpeg-2 file to burn it onto a DVD.
I'm not wanting to play it on my computer. I don't think I'll ever be interested in that...I only want to play them on my standalone DVD player and TV.
What you stated Are the standards that I capture in, but does the authoring process add size to the file?
So, again my 3.85Gig file is too big after authoring apparently.
what is a "safe" Mpeg-2 file size to author and still get it to fit on a DVD after authoring?
(this worked will on my Win98 and W2K machines, but I can't understand why this added size thing is happening with the same authoring programs when I use my XP machine)"Signature"......

What authoring program are you using? Probably your Mpeg-2 files contain compressed audio (Mpeg audio). Most DVD authoring programs convert the audio to uncompressed audio (LPCM) which significantly increases the file size. Try Ulead's DVD Workshop Trial since it allows you to burn DVD with Mpeg audio.

Yes, my audio is Mpeg-1, Layer2.
I've been trying Ulead's VideoStudio7, but Ulead's MovieFactory2 which worked easily with 3Gig files using both Win98 and W2K(and kept the files at 3Gig after authoring and burning them), now in XP Pro is also showing my 3.85Gig files will be 4.8Gig after authoring using MF2.
Is this some weird problem with using XP Pro?
OK, I'll look at DVD Workshop, but does that seem right about VS7 and MF2 using XP?
(I really like VS7 and MF2, except for this. Is there any way to get them to Not increase the file size? I don't see any place in MovieFactory2 to address audio decompression)????"Signature"......

I'll be posting a some Info I have found after 3 weeks of trial and error, but here is what I got from Cyberlink(I use PowerDirector Pro).
My question:
After Capturing a movie from VHS and trimming off extra things and adding text/Audio/Transitions I have a file that windows XP reports to be 3.6GB. When I try to create a DVD with that mpg file Powerdirector reports that the file is too big. My question is why a 3.6GB file is reported by Powerdirector as over 4.8GB on the graph?
Their Answer:
"This problem is caused by PowerDirector Pro used the new estimation mechanism audio size (LPCM) after transcoding, therefore if your recording size is too big (near 4GB), then PDR Pro authoring and burning the DVD what you make may happen this problem.
Now the only way is to minimize your project size then you can avoid the problem. The safe way is to record about 3GB."
So there you have it... I'm going to try Uleads trial and see if I can take the same 3.6GB file and burn it and be happy and if so continue to use Cyberlink's to Create(Already paid $60.00 for it, can't give it all up) and Uleads to burn.
Good luck. -
Snooger,
I'm experiencing the identical thing in my PowerDirector Pro program also, but ONLY in XP Pro.
Win98 and W2K both in all 3 programs (VS7, MF2 and PD Pro)do not change the file size in authoring.

I've authored a DVD using DVD Workshop and used an MPG2 DVD compliant Audio/Video file that was 4,583,474 KB. That's 4.47GB's.
I used a single menu page to keep the file size small and DVDWS did not re-encode. I had thought the largest file I could use was 4.38 GB's. Very cool!
I am using Win2K and don't want to go XP until I have to.
Hope you figure out what your problem is.
