VHS to DV to CPU

For some reason, I have tried 2 different DV cams and have had the same problem. I have all the connections correct. I can see the video from the VHS on the DV but the minute I plue the IEEE 1394 plug in the DV, the screen goes blue and premiere can't see anything anymore. If I shut down my CPU it comes back on.

Gotta be a CPU issue? Have New Dell 8250 P4 3.06 with the ATI Radeon 9700 TX and the OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 controller. Just wondering if anyone had some same issues and/or fixes.

I wonder if both do not allow analog to digital passthrough.

On the Sony, you must enable "DV out" from the camcorder's menu.

Also, have you got a tape in the camcorder? Won't work with one in as the software controls the camcorder via the Firewire connection & if there's a tape it makes it replay which loses the passthrough signal.

I have found that in some configurations it is best to have your firewire cable plugged into the camera & the PC prior to booting up.

Some of the firewire devices are not as plug-n-play as the USB devices.

Well had no luck what so ever on the Sharp so I gave up on that. My only hope is the Sony. The TRV310 is not that old of a digital camera. I check all over the web and in the documentation and it doesn't seem like it has analog to digital passthrough.

Most Sony's will list it if they have it as an option. I checked the entire menu and there is no option to enable DV out. Don't get me wrong, it captures fine as long as the feed is coming from the tape or live feed. Just the minute I plug in the RCA's I can see the feed from the VCR and then plug the firewire in and bye bye feed.

Camera is not mine so before I get one I will make sure it has passthrough as an option.

I guess I'm stuck using the old fasion way of taping from VCR to DV then bringing it in off DV tape. Double work. Very time consuming.

Let me know if anyone has anyother ideas.

Here is the manual for the Sony TRV-310. You are right, it doesn't seem to have a passthrough feature (eventhough it has a video in and a DV in/out).

There's a way to trick the 310. I forget exactly, but it's something like start recording with a tape in, THEN plug in the DV cable. I dunno if that limits you to an hour or not, but even so, it should save a lot of time.

Jester700, I wish I knew the way to "trick" the 310. I thought I tried the record feature with no success. But I think I had the 1394 already plugged in.

I'll try recording to tape then plugging in 1394 and see if that works.

I thought the TRV310 would have the passthrough function. It's not that old of a DV Cam.

Still looking though for more solutions.

Not all cameras do passthrough - my pricey Sony TRV-900 does not.

Kitty, if that model doesn't work...I know the TRV310 won't. Kind of shocking though.

If you don't mind me asking, what methods do you use with that awesome DV Cam?
