  1. hi

I have a avi file that is ripped from a dvd. It's high quality and about 230 mb. I wanna convert it to mpeg and burn it as a vcd. I know how to do this.

    but, this is the problem.
i use TMPGEnc to convert it, a 230MB AVI file will become 700MB MPG. I wanna make the MPG smaller. I know i read a tuturial somewhere, it tells me to change the bitrate. but I can't change it for a vcd file. I don't know how to do this.

I am sure this can be done. cuz i have a VCD that's like this.
someone, ripped a full dvd into 2 mpg files, each is about 450 MB. he let me download those mpg files and i burned them as vcds. The quality of my vcd is great.

I just wanna know how to convert avi to a small mpeg without losing too much quality.

    thank you in advance.

  2. ... you CAN change the bitrate... if you reconvert the AVI that is...
once you have an MPEG file, your options are limited... what i'm trying to say is that, you can't make an MPEG file smaller...

I think you are mistaken El Torro. You CAN reduce the size of the mpeg, by lowering the bitrate, without reconverting the avi. To do this in tmpgenc, load the unlock template found in the extras folder. You can then change any settings you desire. However it will no-longer be VCD compliant, though lower bitrate VCD's (with no other changes) tend to play in most VCD compatible players. Also it will be lower quality, especially during motion scenes.

  4. If you're already in too deep, you can try using REMPG to resize your file...or run it through TMPGEnc again.

  5. Sorry for the stupid question ...but where is the extras folder in Tmpgenc? Cant find it...want to try to lower the bitrate of my MPEG.

  6. have you thought about overburing?

  7. The extras folder is in "..\templates\extras" you want to use the unlock template.

    1) Load the VCD (or what every template you like)
    2) Load you video/audio source file/s
    3) Load the unlock template
    4) Click on settings - confirm that the frame rate is correct. Change the bitrate as needed (use a bitrate calculator to determine)
    5) Click on advance, confirm that the resize is correct (eg. 352x240)
    6) Encode MPEG

You need to double check the framerate/resolution/etc. because sometimes these will be set to whatever your source video is.

If you're burning this as a VCD then this 700 MB file will fit on an 80 min CD-R! An 80 min. CD-R has the capacity to hold 800 MB if burned as a VCD. A VCD is burned in mode 2 and it has a higher capacity than a regular data disk. Don't resize the file if you don't have to.

why is it so hard for people to understand that the size of the avi DOES NOT dictate the size of the mpg?

Are you using the Wizard? You can't load the unlock template in the wizard. When the wizard comes up select cancel, select your files, load your initial template, load the unlock template in the extras folder, adjust your settings, start your conversion.
