Excuse me for my excitement but like I stated before I'm new to the whole back up dvd scene here. I just backed up 3 single layer DVDs using only DVD Decrypter and they all played flawlessly on my XP30 using Maxell DVD-R...ripping the vobs to .iso on my A05 took about 20ish minutes and the burn about 30-40 mins...i can't believe its that simple! I guess its cuz I was used to the LOOOOOONG process of converting vobs to mpeg for making VCDs...that took like 3-4hours.

Sorry, just had to let it out.

  2. I just use SmartRipper to rip to a VIDEO_TS folder then burn that folder with RecornNow. The whole process takes about 30 minutes using 4x media.

DVD Decrypter and SmartRipper rip the same dont they? One isn't faster than the other...its all DVD-ROM player dependent right? The Pioneer A05 doesn't seem to rip that fast...took like 25 mins to rip a single layer movie.

    I dl'd RecordNow...gonna give that a try.

I believe they are both just rippers however one may have more options than the other. I only use Smartripper because that's what I started out with.

I don't use my Sony burner to rip as it's locked or seems to be locked at 2x. I have another DVD drive that I use and for single layer DVD's it clips along at 10 to 14x.

Walmart has a 16x DVD-ROM for like 34.00...i may pick that up to use as my ripper.

Is backing up DVD's suppose to be this easy? I've read a lot of threads where people seem to be using so many different apps to back up and then have sync problems and all sorts of other things. I don't care to have menus and all that if I come across a dual layer disk...using DVD2ONE is perfectly fine for me.

  7. Yeah I agree DVD2one seems fine to me. I can't tell the difference in visual quality from the original on my 48 inch big screen but I'm no expert. I also don't care for the menu or the warning screens and sometimes the future movie ads that they make you watch before you get to the menu. Also no menu is great for my mother who has problems with remotes and menus.

yeah...i thought I was gonna see some quality degradation on my 65" Mitsu watching a back up but my untrained eye noticed no visual problems...looks as good as the original to me. High bitrate SVCDs looked go to me so a DVD back up should definitely look great.

Wierd..I remember a couple years ago while making VCDs thinking how great it would be if we could ever back up to DVD media....lol.

I have to agree, DVD Decrypter is the sweetest program I've found for dvd backups so far (for DVD-5)

Theoretically, I shouldn't be able to use it because I'm running Windows ME, which doesn't support >4Gb files... it still works!

I used to use SmartRipper, but I do find that my dvd-rom rips faster with DVD Decrypter than it did with SmartRipper (highest speeds I saw with SR were around 3-4x, DVDD gets 6-7x on the same dvd-rom drive)

As for all the problems others seem to have, remember three things - not everyone is ripping dvd-5's, so there can be some hoops to jump through for larger discs, and there has been a real surge in easy-to-use tools in the past few months... lots of people here have been doing rips that involve several different programs to get right. Lastly, not everybody is ripping to DVD-R... lots are still doing VCD, SVCD, Divx etc.

And with DVD2One, I have to say, I notice the difference. I had a movie that was only 5.1Gb, I used DVD2One to get it down to DVD-R size, which was only about a 10-15% reduction... and I definitely notice a quality drop. I don't mind it, because it's not a critical video for me, but I can definitely see image degradation and artifacts in the finished disc.
