What would be the best bitrate in an AVI to convert to DVDwith a bitrate of 6000?? Would an AVI with a bitrate of 971 be good enough to convert to DVD,or should i only convert these AVIīs to SVCD?? When will you recommend AVI2DVD,what bitrate should AVI have?

What's the resolution of the source? Higher resolution requires higher bitrate to maintain quality. Standard DVD has a higher resolution compared to SVCD and therefore requires a high bitrate. Increasing the bitrate will improve quality up to a point, beyond which it might not be noticed. Also, you shouldn't try to convert from a lower resolution to a higher one (poor quality). Also, garbage in - garbage out. The resolution (and general quality) of the source might help determine DVD/SVCD/VCD.

My source is an AVI with a bitrate of 971,i tried to convert it first to 6000 then to 4000 and i canīt see any difference.. What i mean is how good should my source avi be, for me to encode to DVD?? And when should i settle for VCD/SVCD??
How many VCD/SVCD can i have on 1 DVD-R??If it aint broke, donīt fix it.

i am getting more and more confused as to when i should encode an AVI to either VCD/SVCD or DVD. I usually have aviīs that are encoded in either Divx or Xvid with a bitrate of somewhere between 900 and 1100. Which settings should i use in TMPGenc to get the best result on these files? Is it overkill to try and convert an avi with a bitrate of about 971 to 6000 DVD mpg2?,should i settle for 2 pass vbr with a bitrate of SVCD 2520?? I am generally very happy with the quality of SVCD when i D/L bin/cue mpg2(SVCD) and if i could convert the aviīs to at least SVCD will that be good enough quality? Should i use TMPGenc templates for encoding,or should i make my own? On this matter, will i be able to burn the SVCD mpg2 on to a DVD-R? Or should i author the SVCD mpg2 as a DVD before i can watch it in my standalone?
This is alot of questions, but hopefully some kind soul will help me,as i am getting very confused with all this talk of CQ,2 pass VBR,CBR and stuff like that.If it aint broke, donīt fix it.

Never convert to vcd or svcd if you are thinking of burning on dvdr.
If you only want one movie on one dvdr then convert to highest possible bitrate, it does not matter what the source is. Instead of resizing the avi to a higher resolution you can instead try use the lower dvd resolutions (352x480 or 352x576) cause resizing up is never good. You may not notice that big different though.
If you want several movies on one dvd then use the lower dvd resolutions and bitrates around 2500-3000 kbit/s and it should look okey.
CBR or CQ_VBR encoding would I use. 2-pass VBR would I only use if I had a very good vide source(not compressed divx) -
Hey Baldrick,again i am confused
When speaking of resolution,i thought that DVD PAL/NTSC had fixed resolutions, that was what made it a DVD file?? If i lower the resolution, wonīt i lower the quality? Does the resolution have anything to do with format? 16:9, 1.77:1 and so on?
When changing the resolution on a PC monitor, you also change the size of the screen image, does this also apply to DVD files? when i change the resolution will it have an effect on how the file is viewed on my TV??
As you can see i am still very much confused about the resolution VS: bitrate thing,i hope you wonīt get tired of answering my questions..
Things where so simple, when all i had to do was load the template for VCD and convert then burn, now i have to worry about all the technical stuff of how DVDīs work..
Yesterday i converted an AVI with a bitrate of 971 to 2 pass VBR with a min. bitrate of 4000 avrg. bitrate of 5000 max. bitrate 6000 and i think the result was very bad,it was blocky when played on my standalone, this is a waste of DVD-R as the quality did not improve from the AVI,maybe even a little worseIf it aint broke, donīt fix it.
