I have Windows 98 Second Edition, and a 20 GIG Hardrive, recently I got a nasty virus which apparently wiped out the entire boot sequence, and failed to recognize the hardrive, I managed to reformat my PC after busting my ass on MS DOS, now my friend told me to create a partition using the startup disk, typing up
A:\ FDISK
and it takes me to the menu from which I choose
Option 1 [CREATE DOS PARTITION or LOGICAL DOS DRIVE]
then
Option 2 [Creat Extended DOS Partition]
then it gets my hardrive information, and tells me that the maximum amount the other drive will be can only be 447MB's, that's right 447 MB's, and when I try to put more it says it's exceeding the maximum limit...what the hell is going on, and their is nothing on my PC that is important because I know I will have to reformat my PC again, so could someone explain me as to what is going on, because I would really like to partition.

DivXerous,
First, what do you mean you managed to reformat? You refomatted before you did fdisk?
Go back to fdisk and delete all your partitions, of which there should be only one if you want to create partitions, as obviously there were none before. Or there was 447 MB left over from the initial fdisk. If it was never formatted, it wont show in My Computer.
a:\ fdisk fdisk screen comes up
select show partition information there should be only 1 if it's never been partitioned.
delete partition which one extended dos no partition to delete or
logical partitions in extended delete if none if only 1 partition
( you know you always hit 'escape' to go back, right?)
delete partition primary dos partition enter ignore warnings, if any.
create primary dos partition may check drive integtity will ask use maximum for partition if yes or no, NO, flashing numbers bottom right
type 5000, 6000, whatever you want enter checking disk integrity
set active partition only drive c:\ can be set as active
create extended dos partition enter use all y ( for yes )
verifying disk integrity escape create logical drives in extended dos partition here you decide if 2 partitions are enough, c and d, or if you want to break it up some more, If you want another you don't have to, it can be 5 or whatever, and 13 or so (a 20 gig is more like 18 Gigabytes, 1024X1024X1024, whereas disk drive makers use 1000X1000X1000, and you wind up a few Gig short.)
It will verify integrity till you're done making partitions. Reboot. Start disk in place, go through the Start with CDROM support again to the a:\ prompt.
format c: warning, etc, ignore, type y, enter, twiddle thumbs for a while, name the partition, format d: enter, ignore warnings, type y, enter, twiddle thumbs, repeat for any more partitions, enter name as many times as necessary
When all done, a:\ prompt, floppy still in place, type sys c: will copy command com, etc to c:\ drive.
from a:\ prompt, e:, f:, g:, whereever your CDROM and Win setup disk is,
type dir: if win98 shows, cd:win98 enter should show win 98 dir enter should show tools , tour , extras, etc setup
Type setup enter, should go through motions, you should be in the install routine.
You should be running by this time tomorrow
cd is change directory, from e:\ whatever to e:\ win setup disk.
dir:<enter> lists all files and folders
Good Luck.

Divxerous,
Did you actually format already? If you didn't, and if you have another computer or hard drive to install, which is running, or even if you can get it running, and if you DID NOT format this drive, you can recover the data.
Message me if you did not actually format, or if you think you may not have, or if you even think it's possible you are mistaken. What I just wrote, can all be done after if you haven't screwed it up already.

Tendes,
What's an auto built in partition that stores data for a restore? There's no such thing as a smart drive. Your builder may have made a small partition to store setup files on, but if he did, you must have bought it from a local. The majors just give you a restore disk, not even a Windows disk to restore from.
At least with a real, honest to god Windows disk, for which you paid, whether you got one or not, you can reinstall Windows, and not make it just like when it was hatched, no feathers or anything. You install 50 programs, and the restore disk brings you back to fresh from the factory, their trash installed, but none of yours. -

Tenders,
I assume you mean a Help folder in windows, or an HP Help icon on the desktop, or something, HP Center, or something? Not an automatic partition?
But, in fact, you have a restore disk? It will restore the machine to the virgin state it was when it left HP, lots of crap installed that you won't use 2 weeks down the road, and none of the stuff you so painstakingly DLd and installed works.
I'd advise you both to buy a good Virus program and set it to full time, automatic protection. Actually, many more people who cry that a virus has hosed their machine, have hosed them by their own self. Again, do yourself a huge favor, and get a GOOD virus program, and use it religiously
DivXerous,
Have you managed to get your hard drive formatted to the full capacity?
Cheers,
