  2. Strikes me that it is one of 2 things:

    1) software out of date- ensure you have downloaded all the updates for your computers, this includes VIA drivers, Win XP Service Pack 1 etc! be careful installing the latest version of direct x because some of your software may not support it! (or if you have installed direct x 9, maybe this is your problem!)

    2) hardware prob- encoding is very demanding on your CPU, it therefore generates a huge amount of heat and so if your PC has insufficient air circulation (eg air intake & outtake as well as heasink & fan) AND/OR your heatsink & fan combo is running your cpu too hot and so it is freezing as a result!

if you can get hold of a hardware monitor (download from your motherboards website) then try running the software that you do (so your pc is at full load, working at max capacity) and then, 10 mins into it (or b for it freezes). if your cpu is running above 60 degrees then this is highly likely to be your problem (in theory they can run at 75 but this does lead to sever stability problems!) If you are running above 55 degrees then i would reccomend better ventilation (just removing the side panel of your case will do as a short term solution) or a better quality heatsink/more powerful heatsink-fan
