  1. I was wondering what is gonna produce better results - A MiniDV camera that has analog passthrough (or audio/video inputs as well as outputs) or a Analog to Digital converter like the ADVC products.

Not sure if one would be superior to the other or if it is all preference.

    Thanks in advance!

  2. The only surefire way to know is by doing an individual comparison of every minidv camera with this feature vs. an advc product. There is so much variety in the quality of dv cameras available that it is impossible to put them all in the same category in terms of quality.

What minidv camera do you have in mind for the comparison?

For what it's worth, the canopus advc products are very hard to beat, but if you already own a minidv camera with this feature, it might be more cost-effective to stick with it as opposed to spending another $250 for the advc (assuming that the quality is satisfactory enough for you).

  3. I actually own an ADVC-50. But my old miniDV camera died and was looking for another. Something like the Sony TRV-11 or Canon ZR10.

I was curious if they will produce better results because then I can get rid of the ADVC. Or if it will be comparable or about the same I will just go with a used cheaper model miniDV camera, as I don't use it to often.

Also my main focus is converting VHS to DVD.

    Thanks.

  4. Hi there,
This question is of interest for me since I own a Sony TRV-740 (D8) and a ADVC-1394 capture card.
My goal here is to transfer old Hi8 footage to DV.
After doing some test ie converting to DV via the Sony camcorder or the Canopus, I can not still decide which hardware gives the best result. Maybe there is a difference, but my eyes don't see it...
