I'm running from DirecTV receiver svideo/rca audio to an ADVC-100, I'm getting a lot of pops and hits in my audio and some minor hits in the video as well ... don't get this to a reference monitor, but I get it to the PC.

It's a Dual PIII800, lots of RAM, sblive! card, not sure what else would matter. No static really, so I'm a bit stumped.

Intention is to homebrew Tivo upcoming F1 season for personal viewing.

Check to make sure that you don't have other processes running that poll the firewire ports or the USB ports (or other programs that interrupt the flow of data.) I used to have the same problem as you until I realized that the USB cradle drivers for my pocket PC were constantly polling the USB port thus creating all sorts of mischief. After I uninstalled them everything worked fine.

Ive noticed this whilst capturing certain vhs tapes, one thing that improved it for me was to unlock the audio via the dip switch (cant remember which one). Thinking it was sync pulse problems with the tape, I tried using a video stabiliser box which did'nt help much. Something I'm yet to try is the macro disable trick by holding down the input button until the test bars disappear, I think the test bars can be seen by putting a monitor on the video out socket on the advc.

Food for thought, in my case my firewire card and onboard usb share irq 10. Cheers for that LanceSteel, I'll disable the usb for a quick test.
