I have read in this forum about "overclocking" your computer. Sorry to be a dummy, but I am guessing this is a way to get your processor to run faster? Will this result in faster encodings and transcodings? How do you get your computer to do this? Will it harm the computer?
I have a pentium III 1 gig hz. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! :P

Overclocking is achieved by increasing the FSB (Front Side Bus) and CPU Voltages (Core Voltages). Doing this causes quite a bit of heat, so if you gonna try it, please make sure you watch your temps. To overclock you probably should have a reliable, good motherboard.
I dont know much about but theres my .02 cents
WARNING: Overclocking voids your warrenty and has been known to mess "things" up, or fry them. -
first of all if you have a store bought like gateway,hp ect.. dont waste your time.you may overclock little if any.
second check to see what your motherboard can support.if it only supports 1.1ghz then thats the most you can overclock.
third know how to clear your cmos, going to far the computer will freze and may not even be able to POST
in the bios there is the front side bus in mhz steps (ie 133,135,140 ect..)
just raise it up step by step
you also have to change some settings in the bios like the ram frequency to +33
do a google search for overclocking and do some reading
[EDIT]dont expect a huge boost on encoding time[/EDIT]
